retailers are marketing to fashion-conscious Muslim women
islam-qa can be so laughably strict, i know that, but it remains the safest to take from. for example, i wouldn't recommend islamonline's fatwa bank!! or at least..compare fatwas between the strict salafis' islam-qa and the loose ikhwanis' islamonline.net, then decide for urself.
as for middle of the road, that's just islam. the truth is one, so..its either that hijab was with niqab..or was not. so it remains to look at the proofs of both sides. i have more to share on niqab but i have no time to translate these days. if u can read arabic i'd give u the links!
but as u can see from that egyptian photo in my blog, that's how hijab was known..even in bosnia! and those who know egyptian movies and musalsalat...remember the turkish hijab women used to wear, all black but the part covering the face is white.
there was never before our generation any debate between scholars on niqab!!
well, search islam-qa.com for the right hijab's proofs, and ..i put a link for a fatwa from that website defending niqab. its on my blog >>> islamic-awareness.blogspot.com
no need to get back at u for that comment, dont see anything with it, but i can say now (again, quicklyyy): human nature didn't change, and u women really dont know hwo sick men are or what they look at in ur bodies, etc etc, and what they do with the images they store in their brains from what they see! the few enlightened ones would know, and all guys reading me will know what i'm talking about. that's why a lose 3abaya, with full face veil...treats a blow to all fasiq men out there, and they hate it just like shaytan, until its their women who r being looked at..!
This is a very complex controversial topic. It is complex as it finally introduces us to the reality of how Hijabiz are being accepted in the west. The mean is economics; market products for Hijabis and cash in, fine! There shouldn?t be a problem if a Hijabi tries to fit in dressing with designer clothes, what is the problem with that, Hijabis do it back home all the time so this is not a first. It will become a problem when these companies exercise some sort of power where the only way a hijabi will be accepted is if she tries to APPEAR in her hijab- which is a mean to be modest- better fit in the western world.
On the other hand the topic is controversial because these same hijabis have a cltural and ethnic identity that is very new for the west! Let?s be honest here, A hijabi is not yet socially understood by the west; therefore, I can understand Platoshadow?s point on cultural transition yet the question becomes how far should a hijabi go to prove her civilized muslim identity among a capitalistic ignorant misinformed audience?
Thanks Palto, and Fadi for the read!
the expense is dilution of your belief system, and your culture in the eyes of the true believers.
But! only as far as it goes in the mainstream. Everyone eats thai and chineese food these days thanks to some serious tweaking of their actual staple foods. but the Thai and the chineese haven't lost their own cultures, they hold fast to them, the only thing is now we accept them (the people, thailand, china as nations) as distinct "actual" entities. Even though our view of them is probably wrong, and stupid at that, since it's based on food.
but, I would guess most americans don't realize Cambodia, laos, nepal and Burundi are countries in their own rights.
why? because they have no access to anythign of their cultures in a physical sense.
they can't hold anything in their hands and think "nepaleese."
We don't loose anything. They get a wrong view of what we are "you are the filafel guys right?, i love your chocolate covered baklawa"
yeah, fine, whatever, just as long as you think Baklawa rather than terrorist when you see an arab.
as it is we are defined by our enemies.
We damn well better start defining ourselves.
And, we better make it easy, accesible and understandable to americans when we do it.
they don't want to hear about our long histories, our cultural neuwances, our linguistic acheivments, our arts and science, they don't want a khutba in islam.
They want to eat tabouleh, put on kufi's and go get down to arabi music in the club.
fine. let them.
nothing happens to our culture amongst those of us who wolld keep it anyway.
the only thing that happens is that it becomes more accepted, and those of us who would let go of a lot of if get to keep this "arabi/islam lite" thing.
and you know what? thats fine with me.
If some arabs want to have nothing to do with their own people who am i to say boo?
but some may want to have some contact, for them, i have arabi lite, in nice digestible chunks. Date cookies, and arabi peotry read to a techno beat.
Plato your point of view is quite interesting coming from a first generation Arab American which you are correct? The real question is how do you become a mainstream and at what expense?
The more widespread the acceptance of Muslim, though it may just be a thin veneer of "islam" and with a lower case "i" at that, serves all the rest of us, and the non-muslims well.
As we move from being frienge groups, to more popularized, even if that popularization comes with some bastardization, we become more acceptable to the majority, which, complain and scream all you want, is extremly valueble in places where we are disorganized, weak, relatively powerless, and demographically, politically adn numerically dominated.
there is no question that we servive in the west based solely on the good will of our hosts. And hosts they are, no matter how hard we attempt to belong we remain perpetual outsiders, this si somethign that will be transferred from parent to child, no matter how secular we become. The color of our skins, our physical features, will designate us as outsiders to these Anglo's in the west. even the lighter skinned among us will have hurdles, albeight less than those i myself face.
I worked with an Arab American who's family has been here since teh 30's, who was born and raised here, christian, light skinned, as even the family name was shortened from Handallah to Handal on Ellis Island. www.slu.edu
And what does he say? well, pretty much the same thing. We don't fit in. (if he doesn't fit in, no one on an arab peeps village as got a chacne)
the problem with being the nail sticking out of the wall of society is that someone might whip out a hammer and try to "fix" things.
The more mainstream we begin to appear to the west, the better off we all are.
You may disagree on if this "acceptance" by the yanks is something that is meritous, but this kind of thing does bring it closer. It makes it easier for those of us who live here to live here, it makes people more open to hearing our messages, it begins to open them up to the idea that Arabs and Muslims are people like them.
That is a powerful idea. One that we damn well better encourage whenever we can. The Jews have benefited greatly from these perceptions. The Muslims, worldwide, suffer immensly because they are relegated to being "not quite" people.
It does no good to talk, if no one is willing to listen.
and, to sooth the bristles of whomever is prepared to jump down my throat. This may make the steps a young muslimah in america takes towards donning the hijab easier.
IT isn't exactly easy to go from dressing like yanks to donning even the headscarf, much less the full regelia.
Accept it for what it is, a fashion accessory, appreciate the good things it brings. It may make transitions easier for our sisters. It may make others more willing to listen with an open mind. It may make them less likely to round us up and shoot us.
This is never as far off as it seems, inshallah everyone in here legally owns a personal weapon.
SS- You have to keep in mind that it is uber hard to walk around nowadays like that, especially after the attacks. Things aren't the same anymore. Now, Im not saying that all hijabis take off your hijabs or to never become a hijabi, but you have to dress accordingly to where you live. If you were in the middle east and you didnt dress like that, you have no excuse. Whereas your living in the States, Europe or Canada, its kinda hard to dress like that and go into any store without be 'maskhara'

The rich hijabis only wear the finest hijabs. Gucci, Dior, Feraggamo, Hermes, Fendi.
They also wear they finest clothes. I know a lady that has her clothes custom made from top end designers.
Yeah
