Reverting to Islam

Please excuse my lack of knowledge regarding this topic but I wanted to know what it means when it is said that someone or another has "reverted" (instead of converted) to Islam. I am trying to understand this concept logically, from an Islamic standpoint. Also, is there a reference in the holy Koran or the hadiths related to the "reverting" vs. "converting" differentiation?

Any information would be very much appreciated.

I see what you mean, Kaniza. It's almost like the person was born pure as he/she was made by Him and as that person grows up, he/she is tainted by his/her family re: a particular religious affiliation but otherwise that person was born Muslim. When that person converts to Islam, he/she actually "reverts" as though he/she was "reborn" without having been tainted by outside religious influences of family, friends, community, etc.

I don't know if that makes sense but that's what I'm getting out of it. Please correct me if I'm wrong. You see, what I don't quite get is that if a person of another religion reverts to Islam, how is he/she reverting if he/she had not had the kalma read into his/her ears to make him/her Muslim at birth? Not sure if I'm explaining it correctly. I mean, a person performs shahadah to revert to Islam but if a non-Muslim wasn't born into Islam (due to family being Muslim and the kalma read into his/her infant ears), how does that "revert"...or does the formality not come into play at all. Sorry if this is too confusing *:
