thats a excellent point agent2000...but having a weapon like Rice greatly increases the QB's and RB's chances of success. I believe in an earlier journal I mentioned the Montana "Magic". See: FAVORITE ALL-TIME PLAYER
Thats a valid point Funkadelic. I am just trying to point out that only a handful of players (no matter the sport) can transcend the game. I dont think Marino had that sort of impact. He didnt redefine what it was to be a QB the same way as Montana did (undefeated in super bowls multiple times) and Elway (incredible clutch player and title holder).
With Rice, I know I am making an iffy argument, but perhaps in general I probably dont weigh the WR position in the same regard as I do the RB and QB position. You have a better chance at neutralizing that position than you do the QB and RB. Thats why I say, Rice, due to the fact teams could not neutralize Montana and the west coast offense, benefited greatly. Teams do not win because of a great WR. They are centered around great RBs and QBs more so.
agent; the problem in both football and bball is that you can't compare players at different positions to eachother. i don't see how you can make the parallel between marino and malone; malone is considered by many to be the greatest PF of all time - and marino is def. a top 5 QB. Rice holds every record there is...and it doesn't seem likely that anyone will break any of them. even what he did in his first two seasons in oak. were remarkable for someone his age. mike shanahan said that he was the greatest player he's seen in his lifetime having coached elway.
Sorry, but when you have Taylor, Craig, and Montana, a perfectly run west coast offense... and 3/4 of your Dynasty team in the Pro Bowl...it sort of helps. Limits injuries, gets you open, etc. Rice is an all-time great...stick Randy Moss, Harrison, or even someone like Andre Reed (all by the way great recievers in their own right)... you would get the same level of greatness.
Marino wouldnt be my first choice QB, not even my 5th or 6th choice. I consider him similar to Karl Malone... really great player... good stats.... but he should never be considered legendary like a Magic, Bird, or Jordan. I dont understand this nostalgia for him. Outside of his first 4 seasons... which were total abberations to what he did later.... what else do you have?
I stand pat with my arguments. My top 3 : Lawrence Taylor, Elway, Walter Payton.
My bro is also the bigger ELway fan also. Another point we always discuss is that, Marino had a chance to go into a run oriented offense under Jimmy Johnson, but seemed reluctant to defer and take a hit on his stats. Pretty selfish attitude. Marino is a bit overrated, since he was the one and only option. And outside of his early eye popping years, there isnt much there.
WRs in general are a product of the system. So I dont think I can give Rice THAT much props. Though he is a top 20 player for sure.
i think rice is the greatest player i've ever seen play - at any position. im not a big elway fan; my bro is; and although i think he's great, he's not better than montana. give marino a decent RB (like Terrell Davis), and he woulda won at least a SB imo...
