Romantic love lasts one year

So romantic love fades and becomes "companionate love" after just one year. Which we all kinda knew anyway. Bolsters the 'arranged marriage' case though...!

Strangely, Irf, I get a similar but subtly different urge when she says the word "face".

I met Dr. Ruth twice in the last month. I wanted to put a bag over her face when she said "vagina" :#

Hm. I think the first-flush euphoria and the storming/norming phase of conflict are diamtrically opposed. That's when relationships usually break up and I'd hazard a guess to say that nearly every relationship we have ends at that stage. When people think the sudden plummet in euphoria and the rise of coflict means that love is no longer present. This is like the boss battle in a video game (heh!). You either lose all your lives or you move on to the next level! But, in short, no, I think the euphoria is phenomenon - by definition, rose-tinted means not clear. And at this atge you need to be seeing things very clearly to survive. If the euphoria is what gets you through it - the conflict has not really been resolved, just gilded. And that means the bigger upset is still to come...!

yes i agree with you jamal - when i was younger i used to think 'i'm in love with...' was the beginning and end of all love and now realise this is not the case and is a huge difference to 'i love ...'.

however when a relationship grows and it goes towards the companionate love, that doesn't mean the romance has to die. the romance can live as long as u want it to live...

You're making too much of the conclusion, Yehb. It's not saying love can't last. It's saying euphoria can't last. And for me, anyway, the real love is the 'companiate' one not the first flush. That's teenage, puppy-love stuff that no-one should take seriously. I mean, sure, enjoy it, just don't take it too seriously.

Love lasts because its nature changes into a less ostentatious, deeper and more refined emotion. "I'm in love with x" (euphoric, passive, exaggerated, something happening to you not caused by you) is a different proposition from "I love x" (quieter, more profound, active, where you are the cause in the matter).

Well, yeah, Yehb, it's all chemical reactions but that's not the end of it. It's the qualia that counts, as the philoophers say. After all, the warmth of a summer's day is just the aggregate speed of air molecules and the rich red of a rose is just certain wavelengths of light being absorbed by the petals. It doesn't mean that the flower or the summers' day are not beautiful (even spiritual) things.

Yes, the euphoria of love is chemically induced. No, this doesn't mean a thing.
