Scales?

I'm more of a rhythm player, but really wanna get into lead. I know scales are an important part of this, but I just can't get into them!

I have a few books that cover them, but it's confusing - major/minor/pentatonic etc.

I mean, if I was playing along to a song, how would I know which one to use???

Anyone got any tips for getting into it and improving my lead playing?

Sometimes just simplying knowing the position of the notes is not enough. There are some techniques and things that go with playing solos. For me the best way to learn has been imitating some easy solos. If you listen to desi bands then I recommend trying to imitate Junoon's guitar solos, they're usually simple but very soulful. You'd know what key the song is in, then you learn the notes of the solo and trace that back into the formula of the scale. Play the same solo on different octaves and keep playing them until you become familiar with the scale. Then improvise your own stuff on it.
