I dont think its inevitable? We've all seen good leaders and presidents, havent we? If not in Pakistan, then elsewhere, I mean. Ronald Reagan was said to be nice and stuff like that. So yea, this is just a quote thats meant to caution us that hey, when you get take a position of a lot of responsibility, you gotta be more careful, thats all.
It just depends on the individual. Absolute power is actually impossible to achieve. You're never invulnerable. You gotta watch out, if you're bad, it will come to you in one way or the other.
I think the comment should be made specifically for the sub-class of humans currently known as politicians. But does that mean that we need a new "..itian" to come and fix this wrong? Or does the wrong get fixed by Allah when and as the time comes?
It is basic human nature, to rule and to shun being ruled. We all like controlling, it comes so naturally to us, cos we want things to happen, function and behave the way we want them to irrespective of their being RIGHT or WRONG. On the other hand most of us, infact all humans hate being subjects, we dont like to authority over us.
Why talk jst of politics, look closer, at families. The age old Saas Bahu ka jhagda has its roots in as to who controls, runs and has absolute power in the household.
Absolute Power gives us the right to question and erases the obligation to be questioned. Its sweet and its sinful and yes it corrupts cos its basic human nature and it cant be changed and can only be overcome. And those who do conquer it, are a little more than human beings.
I think that politicians in desi land are no more/less corrupt then their western counterparts. Corruption in desi land is just more on the surface, while in some western countries you just have to did deeper to find the corruption..but it's there..it exist...just in diff forms with diff nuances..but corruption all the same. Examples--Watergate, Sponsership Scandal in Canada, Weapons of Mass Destruction..ummm yeah where are they again?
Politics is the art of compromise. You have to give a little in order to accomplish a part of your mandate. A good politician is then one who strives for the greater good without compromising too much.
Well positioned charismatic politicians seem to be very successful, just look at Blair.
One does need a big ego if one thinks going about change can be accomplished by oneself, however, politics is a social game that requires teamwork to manage shifting alliances.
Corruption in various lands run about at the same level since money and power are universal languages. However, the difference may be apparent in the tastes of the corrupted and knowing where to look to identify them.
Nice quote As851 - is Salima's point and one that seems to make sense.
However, there are limitations though. Political power is achieved through compromise, otherwise you will go nowhere v fast. And I wonder if you compromise, then compromise some more, then more and more etc. Until what you finish up with in no way resembles what you started out with? I do think that some politicians genuinely want to change things, but there has to be a huge amount of ego invovled if one believes that ONLY by being personally involved, will s/he be able to change things.
Power + ego = corruption? At least mentally if not monetarily
BUT POWER AND POLITICS DEFIN GO AS THIS BRINGS MONEY AND US HUMANS ARE GREEDY!!!
THE OTHER THING,,,,,PAKIS LOVE SHOWING OFF AND POWER TO THEM MEANS GETTING A BIGGER MUSH AND WALKING WITH THE LEGS WELL APART AND ARMS FLYING AND GETTING FATTER AND FAT,,,, THEN DYING WITH A HEART ATTACK!!!
does power corrupt or does it just expose weaknesses in moral character of some people? or can even a person with a "strong moral character" be corrupted by power?
Power gives one a false sense of invincibility. When one feels invincible they feel they can get away with any thing, they feel they don't have to be accountable... and when a person feels this carefree and unaccountable they tend to get carried away by the desires of their own ego.
Ego less reason equals nothing short of disaster, destruction and desolation and a conscience bereft of reason leaves no room for the nafs to grow and guide.
It is very rare indeed to have power and not misuse it.
My family has witnessed such destruction first hand... when brother is willing to kill brother for the sake of gaining power.

Always better to share power, I say.
