shockwave & network sockets

Has anyone used SWF with sockets, or something to read data over the network which you would use to update your display accordingly? Not coldfusion or something expensive and/or bloated.

Thanks

Ok. I dont know much about this but just know what you are talking about. What are good sources for learning how to use shockwave (and reading in data)? I have the flash mx 2004 pro (trial). Ok with using php, javascript.. the display would have some graphical layout, and markings on the graph would change or adjust according to the new data I get (then I would refresh the display).
Thanks

how about the plain old, header refresh trick, load the data every time its refreshed, could use frames to keep is calm and subtle
