shot in the butt
A University of Maryland student was shot in the buttocks just after midnight this morning on Lehigh Road near a student dorm on the College Park campus.
University of Maryland Campus Police Maj. Cathy Atwell said the student called them from an emergency phone, saying he had heard shots and was in pain.
The 21-year-old student from Silver Spring was reported to be in good condition at an area hospital.
The victim said he saw four or five young men running from the area who he thought were too young to be college students, according to police.
The motive for the shooting wasn't immediately clear.
Atwell said police are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the crime to come forward. "We're extremely concerned," she said. " security of students is a top priority."
