SI Sportsman Tom Brady

Congrats to Tom Brady for getting the SI's Sportsman of the Year Award. I think he thoroughly deservers it. Not only is he a great quarterback, he is smart, articulate and hasn't let fame get to his head.

Peyton Manning is to Dan Marino
(losers with records)
as
Tom Brady is to Joe Montana
(winning when it counts the most)

Thoughts?

if there was a team id support to go to the super bowl from the AFC other than teh Broncos, it'd be the Pats. A three-peat would be cool to see.

distinguished: nobody is comparing Elway to anyone... that would be blasphemy. and by the way, the broncos' first superbowl appearance was before elway. he took the team to five superbowls, winning the last two.

the real reason i'm lauding brady now is because the pats conveniently lost to the broncos earlier this season.

i had my doubts about brady when he first took over the pats in place of bledsoe. i thought that his first superbowl win was a fluke, even a conspiracy by the government to have the "Patriots" win to appease the minds of the american public after 9/11. seemed too good to be true.

but time and gain, he has come through for the pats.

i agree with what ahsan has to say. reverseswing should probably reverse his swing on this one or he's gonna end up bowling a wide (i know it's corny, but i was dying to say it :) and this seemed like the appropriate moment).

brady has only gotten better with time. the other thing i like about him is that he doesn't go around whining about injuries to his teammates and use that as an exuse. he goes out there and takes care of business.

You don't win 3 Super Bowls despite your quarterback. The kid is the reason the Pats were able to take it to the next level with him rather than all-pro Drew Bledsoe. You want to talk about field goals? You can't disregard that the quarterback has to put them in position to kick those field goals. Reputations are built on 4th quarters and that's why Brady is now in the pantheon of the likes of Joe Montana. If you want to wait till Manning wins 3 Super Bowls, we'll be waiting a long time, and most likely be speaking of Eli. But even then, it will probably never be 3 out of 4 years. Brady's job is not just to not throw INTs, its to move the ball when it matters. And until last season, that was without Corey Dillon.

Why doesn't anyone ever see beyond the MVPs and rings? Brady is pretty good but he works in a very disciplined system where his job is NOT to throw INTs and to just keep the team in the game. It's the kicker's job to win the game if anyone has ever noticed. every single tough game that we give him credit for "winning" is actually more to thhe kicker's credit (granted Brady does have to take em down the field but teh pressure is infinitely less when you know you won't be going for a TD at all). plus, we must remember that all of this started with a never heard of tuck rule. who knows how things might have turned out otherwise. Also, we don't know yet what Manning might do over the next few years so let's not compare anyone to anyone until they're close to retiring.

I always find it hard to compare the best QB's in history because they played in different eras and different types of defensive and offensive strategies.

I'm of course biassed but i really feel strongly that Elway was the best QB. He really did it all and brought a very mediocre team to 4 super bowls before finally winning.

Uh oh, i'm expecting a lot of flaming now. :)

Tom Brady is money. If I had to win a playoff game, I'd want him leading my team. Manning may get the numbers but his legacy will be a notch below Marino's if he doesn't ever win it all, since Marino never had the threat of an Edge in the backfield, nor did he ever have a receiver on the level of Harrison.

I normally wouldn't care about a team like the Patriots, and usually develop a negative attitude towards dynasties but there is something about these Patriots that you just have to respect. No over-spending a la George Steinbrenner, no overhyped superstars, just winners.

The legacy of Brady is now unquestionable. But I am curious to see if Belichik can coach a team back to the top without Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel. If he does that, he is hands down the greatest coach of all time.

Me too. Although that would definitely be mission impossible. Problem is is that I believe both QB's can lead their offenses down the field and score. Problem is that Indy defense can definitely make 1 more stop then New England.

I will thoroughly laugh and enjoy if/when Brady beats Manning in the playoffs, especially if the Colts run the table in the regular season.

Congrats to Tom Brady! Keep it up and inshallah we will get another SuperBowl.

It has been a tough year for him since September but everything is back on track right now.
