Simple and Complex Carbs
Carbs are the main source of energy.. Carbs are broken down into glucose and released into the bloodstream. The speed in which it does this differs in Simple and COmplex Carbs.
Complex carbs are called 'complex' because they have a complex molecular structure. Simple are called simple because they have a simple structure (doh). so it takes longer to break down complex carbs and its quicker to break down simple carbs.
When you eat carbs, they are released into your bloodstream as glucose or stored in the form of glycogen (preserved energy).
Simple carbs are bad (although some people say its good to take some straight after a workout), and complex carbs are good.
why?
Simple carbs (because theyre broken down so easily) produce a rush of glucose straight into your bloodstream. this sudden change in blood sugar levels calls Mr. Insulin to the rescue (hes the guy who comes to do all the cleaning up). He cleans out all the glucose from the bloodstream and grabs all the fatty acids and shoves them into fat cells for storage. Hes so evil.
Complex carbs on the other hand provide a more stable release of the gluose allowing more productive workouts and sustainability. This stable release of energy will keep you sexed up for your workout or keep you from feeling all tired and neglected.
Simple: Watermelon, bagels, cheese, donut
complex: orange, peach, oatmeal, peas, daal, brown bread
Moral of the story? Dont be ashamed if mommy has cooked daal. just eat it!
