Single Women with children

I have a question for everyone.
Why are guys afraid to consider single women with children? I know if a guy falls for a woman and she has kids, maybe he will accept the children, but if he knows ahead of time that she has children, he might not even want to give her a chance. Why are men so afraid of children?

Along the same line, why are men afraid to adopt other children if they have their own? Many would consider it if they don't have their own children, but otherwise would not like to adopt.

Men are afraid of too much of responsibilities, for goodness sake they take their freakin time with a single woman without any kids to consider them for marriage. Let alone women with children!

Irfani, you made a good point too, that if you love that person and can make it work, the complications are only in your head. But alot of guys wouldn't even consider giving such a woman any chance. Thankfully, times are changing and there are men you are more open minded. There are also those who think they wouldn't, but once they fall in love with that woman, start to love her children too. But it takes work to get to that point and most men would shy away from that.

Well I was mostly referring to divorced women with children but I guess we can include unmarried women with children. I know thats not a very common practice among muslims but it can happen. What if a girl was taken for a ride but later dumped by the guy after she became pregnant but didn't want to abort the baby? Or worse, what if she was raped?
I used to be very naive about such things but I'm learning to be more open minded and give everyone a fair chance. Hear their story, get to know them, before passing any judgements on them.

Its easy to have a checklist of requirements when looking for a spouse but that can really limit your choices and you might miss out on a spectacular potentional because you were blinded by what you thought was acceptable or not. Ok, it may not quite limit your choices but you could still be missing out on a great person anyways.

In fact, one way to look at it is, you know what kind of a mom this person is. If you like what you see, you know how she will be with your child.

Well luckily (or not) for most of our "people" divorce is becoming more popular so those in similar situations can relate without putting a stigma on this

Also some women are looking for men to take the place of the father of their children because unfortunately the real fathers have abandoned their children and are not in their lives. Many men who don't have children of their own are not ready to do that.

Do you mean divorced women with children, or women who had children out of wedlock? If you're talking about women who has children out of wedlock then the answer is obvious. Why would a Muslim man want to get serious with someone who did that? Also, I agree with TheOutkast that men who have children and are in similar situations as these women would relate better to them. So a man who has children would easily go for a woman who has children.

Every red blooded male loves his OWN children and some one else's wife, simple!

Filza,

You are an amazing mom. I agree, a child is a child. I don't think I could ever love a child any less b/c he or she was adopted. Each child that is brought into this world is a gift from Allah. I hope I'm as awesome as a mom as you are one day, inshallah!

Thats the problem with men...they cannot look beyond their own heritage. I was always open to adopting and when I was married, my ex was against it. I guess I have to give him credit bc he was honest about it...saying he could never fair to his child and an adopted child. To me a child is a child and how can u not love a child. But perhaps thats my motherly instinct speaking.
Even now I tell my mom, even if I don't get remarried, I"m fine bc I will just adopt a daughter and continue being a mom.

I guess then it will be harder for me bc the guy will have to accept 2 kids with me. :P

Plus doesn't every man want a good mom for their child? You can see what kind of a mother she is and you can't wrong.

I think for the most part, men who have children and are in similar situations as these women, relate better with them. Ex. The Brady Bunch!

All jokes a side, guys with no kids of their own find this hard to deal with. Plain and simple.

Good, valid points Outkast.

However if you love the person and pragmatically can manage the children, then complication is just in the mind.

OK. Here is your answer. You may not like it but its the truth and I apologize for how ignorant its gonna sound. Don't hate me for it, just keeping it real. Men see women who have kids as women who have been or are sexually active, thus, creating an insecurity issue cuz they feel the women are not as pure to them. Plus, there is always the father of the children who will most likely always be in the childrens life (unless he has passed), and also when the men want to have their own kids one day, there will be constant drama surrounding the half kids and the real kids as far as love, inheritance, favortism, etc. Get the drift? Its just a very complicated issue.

filza, genetically speaking (down the ages, don't know how relevant this is these days) it was selfishness which caused men (the providers) to run from anything which depleted their resources (meat, funds) without a proper return (read other people's kids).. which is hideous.

not sure whether this would extend to a child one has adopted... but the argument goes that people want to propagate their genes/ bloodline/ family name.. any child with another surname/ an adopted child is an exception to this.. and therefore a waste of resources !

I think everyone has their hangups. Everyone has this idea in their mind of what they're looking for and it is different for different people. Some people really want someone who speaks Urdu, for example, or was raised in country "X", or who has not been married before, or was raised with a certain level of religious practice, etc. If I put myself in the shoes of a guy setting out to find his ideal mate for the first time in his life, I could see why he might not be interested in me, a divorced convert. People with children, divorced people, people of different cultures - all of these, in a sense, have extra "baggage" compared to a girl with none of those issues.

There are brothers out there who will consider single women with kids, and brothers for every other kind of woman as well. There are some cultural issues that make it somewhat harder than it ought to be for "baggage" people to find matches - but there are getting to be so many "baggage" people out there of both genders that they are increasingly matching up with other. There are single brothers with kids - they might be more open to matching with a woman with her own kids, for example.

Regarding point 1, Gala said it best.

Unfortunate yes. More non-Muslims have less of an issue of marrying men/women with children.

Interesting

These are 2 separate topics Filza.
first women with children: the most obvious answer is extra responsibility. most men will shy away from that because they do not want to raise someone's else children. it is not Islamic to think this way, but it is unfortunately the instinct for most people. and that goes for men and women as many women would not want to get married to a man with children.

The other issue is adoption: islam does not permit adoption in the western sense. and adopted child can not take the name of a care taker. Instead people can sponsor orphan children.
