Sirilanki maid commits suicide in lebanon

Sushar Rosky--lest she dies namelessly--is a Sri Lankan maid who killed herslf by hanging early morning yesterday in Sidon in Lebanon.
The Ugly (real) Face of Lebanon: This is the real Lebanon: the real Lebanon is a place of hate, sectarian animosities, and blatant racism deeply rooted in delusions about non-existent grandeur. The real Lebanon is a country where people shamelessly oppress the poor and the destitute, and then have the temerity to brag about an imaginary Lebanese ?civilization.? This a country where people shamelessly express contempt for those who work for them, especially if they are darker in skin, and then have the chutzpah to think that Lebanese are superior to other Arabs. This is a victim that will not be mentioned in Lebanese news bulletin, and her death will go unnoticed. Not even an investigation is warranted because the victim is a poor maid from Sri Lanka: her name for the record is Sushal Rosky (b. 1987), and she killed herself by hanging early morning yesterday. The lousy Hariri rag (Al-Mustaqbal) even mocked her death: they said that her love of her country has killed her. Her death must have looked hilarious to Hariri followers for some reason. But then again, I never understand them, and they never understand me. Nobody knows what her employers have done to her, to lead her to this. This is not an isolated incident: this is part of a long pattern of Lebanese ?excellence? in the abuse of maids, especially those dark-skinned workers from Sri Lanka who come to Lebanon with no rights, and have their passports confiscated. Whenever you see images of the right-wing opposition, and whenever you see the images of ?telegenic? Lebanese who so impressed Western reporters even at left-wing publications?don?t get me started here?remember that those same people who can converse with western reporters in their western languages, and who are keen on emulating the latest in Western fashion before they even see it in their silly fashion magazines, those same people go home to subject their Sri Lankan maids to unspeakable abuse, harassment, and mistreatment. This is the Lebanon that no Lebanese flag, and no silly Rahbani songs can hide. This is the Lebanon that can really explain the longevity of the Lebanese civil war: place boiling with hate and with deep-seated complexes that are responsible for the most self-deluded "culture" that I know. The body of this maid will be flown back to her country?I hope?and the Lebanese state will not conduct an investigation of her death. Why would they? The employers told the press and the police that, oh, she was simply homesick and that is why she killed herself, BY HANGING, using pieces of clothes in the early hours of the morning. The afore-mentioned Hariri rag thought that this was very funny. Hariri followers will probably be exchanging jokes about her, and Lebanese Forces chat rooms will now circulate their own ?humorous? versions of her death. Jubran Khalil Jubran once commented about that society observing that inside the mouth of that ?nation? are ?rotten teeth.? Don?t expect the US State Department to comment on her death, the freedom loving president of yours will not call for an investigation, and Kofi Annan, who had no clue about the massacres in Rawanda and about the corruption of his own son, will not call for a special meeting of the Security Council. This foreign domestic worker was not a billionaire, and her death will go unnoticed. When the billionaire Hariri was killed, the silly organization known as the Socialist International (what would Marx, Bakunin, and Proudon think of that outfit, one wonders) sent a special delegation to mourn Hariri. They will not be mourning her. The Nation magazine which could not get a hold of itself when Hariri-An-Nahar journalist, Samir Qasir, was assassinated will not publish special tributes to her. No western government will express alarm about her plight. This will be a death that will be added to the many deaths that go on regularly in Lebanon without any fanfare or press releases: these are the deaths of people who have no lobbies behind them, and no powerful government. Her death will be added to the deaths of scores of poor Syrian workers who were victims of a movement that shouted slogans about ?freedom? and ?democracy? and ?independence??Bush?s version of that, to be sure. No songs will be composed to mourn Sushar Rosky, and Lebanese and Arab singers will not rush to sing her praises the way they do when Hariri or King Fahd died. Arab satellite stations will not send a team to interview her family in Sri Lanka, and no Lebanese newspaper (I hope that Doha Shams of As-Safir will be the exception?I know that she will) will send a team to investigate the circumstances behind her death. This death in a just world would, and should, open the file of the horrendous abuse of foreign domestic workers in Lebanon. Let us face it: slavery has been banned in Arab countries, but forms of slavery exist in every single Arab country. I once asked an Asian worker in Qatar whether the treatment of Asian workers in Gulf countries was akin to slavery. ?Semi-slavery? he corrected me. Western human rights organizations which scrutinize even the utterances of the Palestinian people will not utter a word in her memory. Life will go on, and the Lebanonese nationalist people will go on bragging about hey they are better than everybody else around them, how they are superior in their very genetic makeup. If they only know; if they only know how pathetic they sound, and how clueless they are about their very existence. I will not post nice pictures, poetry, or art today. I will not post anything today. Let this picture stands as a testimony to the cruelty of people, and to the injustice in the world that goes on every single day, with little if any press attention. This image will stay with me. And if US media are not busy covering the ?anguish? of Israeli occupation soldiers and the ?suffering? of Israeli colonial settlers, will they find the time to cover her death?

Neveen, I weren't talking about myself, but its something I sense in Arabs (they want another dialect to change the atmosphere), but none can challenge Egyptian at all, khalas, you guys outnumber a whole group of Arab countries, lol, and have established a deeply rooted presence in the conscience of most Arabs, but if you were to ask me about your lahjah, I can't take an Egyptian for a wife because I won't be able to take her seriously EVER, because when she'll talk..I'll always think I'm watching Film Masri :p lol

I didn't rule out 'natural beauty' from Lebanon, like I wouldn't do that with any other nation on earth. If Lebanon has Georgina Rizk, other Arab countries have ones they can cite their names as well, 3adi, but to say that the Lebanese enjoy more beauty..is something you need to verify! There are 17 million Lebanese worldwide, YES, only 3 millions reside in Lebanon!! Brazil alone has 7-8 million Lebanese, so..let's look at the women among all those many millions, compare them to non-Lebanese Arab women, while holding a calculater, then let's get the percentage of 'beauty' on both sides. I can't believe I even read once for a Lebanese Naseeber here (name I won't disclose) saying: "I know I don't have typical Lebanese looks!"...why, what ARE those typical Lebanese looks exactly? Or did she mean 'beauty' Lebanese women like to be known for??? Incredibly shallow!

please, nancy 3ajram and haifa wehbe are no example to leb women! we all know they're plastic!!!! i'm not defending leb women, but to say we have no beauty is too much. i think that the true beauty of leb women are those who don't go infront of the camera. but just a name from those leb beautieswho did, what about georgina rizk? she didn't have any plastic surgeries back then!!! anyhow, SilkySword, don't get me wrong, i do support many of the things you said below.

With regard to Lebanese women, its a mere MYTH that their beauty stands out among those from other Arab countries. The reason is that..Lebanon has the largest non-Muslim, and liberal-mind Muslim percentage among all Arab (Muslim) countries, thanks to the Christian presence and the work of many decades by the missionaries in the country. And due to their economy being in a a deadlock except when it comes to Tourism and standing before Cameras, coupling that with their women being naive (whether Muslim or not, like most Muslim women around the globe -due to lack of proper Islamic knowledge), more of them will stand before the cameras than other Muslim / Arab women, and more of them will show 'more of their bodies' and use more makeup (of course) than other women, and what's the result? The thought that Lebanese women are the most beautiful!!!! Why? Because there are no comparisons being made by the 'viewers', which is both understandable and also not: Egypt's movie industry has showm women from decades ago, and who can say that some of them weren't very beautiful? But other Arab countries had no real movie industires or none at all, plus their women were still traditional and more into Islam..so they wouldn't show in mixed places let alone to shoot stupid silly TV series!! Plus, look at Lebanese programs until the late 1990's, you'll see not much beauty in their women, because the latest ways of straightening hair and weaering make-up..didn't then reach them, and when it did..it also reached Egypt! Lebanese women only reveal more 'skin', and their dialect is understandably more pleasant to the ear than Egyptian (which people have probably become tired of, and Lebanese came as a change they needed, and every 'new' thing will have a 'market', for sure). Plus, who are the icons of Lebanese beauty really? Name me whoever you want and let's look up their old photos!!! Fairuz had a big 'Semitic' nose before she had a nose job, and she was too skinny always :s Nancy 3ajram did many cosmetic surgeries and I saw her pictures before them!!! Who else, Nawal el-Zoghby I saw pictures of her also before the cosmetic surgeries and without make up!!! Who else? HAYFA WAHBI TOO, I saw her pictures before she became famous and important at all to the Arab media giants. So anyways,...another popular fallacy (that the Lebanese are the most beautiful they are not from a race different from that of peoples around them, and in fact many come from Syrian or even Palestinian backgrounds (and vice versa), even Turkish, Armenian, Kurdish, and many surface in them the 'crusader' genes from those Crusaders who settled in the region after Salahuddin's conquest of Jerusalem, and these crusader genes are shared today by many from Bilad al-Sham, and more Arabs are joining as inter-cultural marriages and studying / living abroad is no longer a unique experience of few, elite Arabs.

Haz,you're right, and it's sad that people view lebanon that way. the sad part is that whenever you talk to someone about leb, they say oh you have beautiful women there...pleeeease!it's not all like that! actually, more and more people are going back to islkam, as more and more are doing terrible things...i have nothing against the gulf, many lebs are living because of the wealth they earn there, but ijust hate it when i see them here doing what they do....i hope you get what i'm talking about

as for the sri lankian girl,Platoshadow, i think it's sad that's she's only 17,but no matter how old she was it's still unaccptable to treat them that way.

plato she is 8 years younger than you not 7

Lily I know what you are talking about I really do and have seen what they do not only in Lebanon but also in Syria and Egypt. One thing I have to say that I don't really think Arabs envy Lebanese I think Arabs have the wrong idea about Lebanese basically they stereotype them for example they think all Lebanese are loose, don't practice Islam (for Muslims) and are all party animals and while this maybe true to some in Lebanon especially in some parts of Beirut it's not the case at all for the majority of people.

Fck lebanon. but this is not restricted to them.

these things don't happen in isolation, as fadi says the lebaneese newspapers handling of this is terrible. the general sense of superiority is palpable.

this girl was 17.
7 years younger than myself. no more than an accident of fate that she wasn't born in Puerto rico, and i in Sri Lanka.

lily - a lot of arabs may envy lebanon, but a lot of women envy the attention strippers get as well.

envy from others is not something one should use as a benchmark of quality.

inshallah, the next sri lankan who feels as downtrodden as this one, will find the strength to take a machete to the family, rather than have to end her life like this. it may be the beginings of change, freedom is not granted, is must be taken by force, It may be forgotten, it may be the begning of a new workers and peasants movement throughout the arab world. too bad they are unarmed.

17 years old. what a shame.

As for Syrian workers, they have the right to seek employment wherever they want, just like you Lebanese people do and flood the Gulf as well and its satellite channels with your male and female anchors. You get the high paying jobs like those, but Syrian don't get those, neither in your country nor outside theirs, and their country we all know is stupidly run like all the other Arab countries! Your Lebanon is only more of a tourist attraction because your government has nothing else to generate income from beside tourism and the jobs it creates for the Lebanese landlords and owners (not necessarily the waiters and waitresses) to pay your many taxes!!! Why don't you accept those low-paying jobs the Syrian accept in Lebanon, and stop having this empty KIBR you have??? You accept to do in the West what you don't accept to do in Lebanon!!!! The Lebanese themselves admit that on TV!!!

weak, coward Syria didn't kill Hariri. What happened to the Lebanese and Kuwaiti's is Allah's wrath, just like the Palestinians; Allah first sends us those who don't fear him, or he makes our might wasted among ourselves, but all is for how we behave in his dominion.

I'm shocked.
This death is of course awful but how can u say all those things abt Lebanese ppl? I mean, this sad event could have happen in another Arab country, would u wrote the same about its inhabitants?? I think that u took advantage of this fact (as horrible as it can be) to say all the horrors that u wanted to about Lebanese ppl. I can't let u say that this fact can somehow explain the longevity if the Lebanese civil war, it's stupid!! Sure that her death is extremely sad but don't compare it with Rafik Hariri's one!!! Lebanese r racist, I'm Lebanese and I agree with this fact; they won't do anything 4 her and it's not a good point; however, don't mix everything ya Fadi, Hariri was killed by syrians, everybody knows it, and it's more than normal to make an investigation to arrest those who killed him...

The Lebanese are still 'mfar3ineen', the long years of war didn't bring them closer to Allah 'enough', like even the Kuwaitis after Saddam invaded them. The Lebanese are all about 'showing off', if they were irreligious, and that's most of them, Muslims I mean here (and just like Muslims worldwide). I hear from the Lebanese themselves on how they spend on a nice car, only to not have enough to fill it with gas, so they'd leave their watches with the gas attendants, or they'd spend hundreds of dollars on dinner after inviting a friend, then when they turn their backs to the restaurant..they borrow from that very friend few dollars, lol! Safah / khiffit 3a2il. Allah la yiblaana.
