Social responsibility

is society responsible for the disparities in health status?

health status, not health care.

so, is society responsible for poorer people being fatter? and suburban kids using more drugs?
and poorer people smoking more...
etc....

or is it individual choice?

-FULL DISCLAMER-
I am working on a paper in an ethics class about this, i am not planning on plagerizing anyone, but maybe outside perspectives will help me focus the discussion more.
i'm starting to work on it tomorrow, after suhur. so i haven't really begone fleshing out my arguments yet. I will be pushing for social responsibility. but am interested in both sides of the argument ( i willbe taking both sides in the begining before witling it down to social responsibility)

i'll keep you all updated, regardless whether or not you want to throw in your two cents. you can punch holes in it as it takes form.

the envoronment and society is more of an influence than we are ourselves mate surely!!!! god id have a complex about eating and looking stunning if eveyrwhere i wenr there were images of studdly looking alpha males on every billboard and poster you walked by. perhaps society doesnt "create" the monsters we talk of but it certainly perpetuates them.

yes, i think we are. we are ultimately responsible for ourselves, but we are creatures that live in community and we rely on those around us. our actions impact (in a negative or possitive way) others and we must take responsability for that.

you mention obesity... if a person is obease because he/she is depressed, overworked, overstressed - and has tried to get help but couldn't (like kaiser totally letting the mentally ill down) and thus, turned to food as a comfort or as the cheapest and fastest food... that is a direct result of the failures of society to help and support it's people. that speaks to the family, work, religious and other structures all the way up to the state and government levels.

we are all brothers and sisters of the One Creator God. We must support and love our siblings and stop only looking out for ourselves!!!!!!!

I forget who said it... but in reference to the Natzi's... "they came for the lame and the old and i said nothing for i was not one of them. They came for the Jews and I said nothing for it didnt involve me. They came for the Catholics and I looked the other way. I didn't want to get involved. When they came for me, there was no one left to defend me."
