something to cheer about...

salaam...as most of you must have heard; phil jackson is back with the lake-show. for all the arrogant laker fans who had to go through a miserable season (rightfully so), you can now at least be a little confident.

personally, i can't stand the dude, and i think he's a money hungry hoe (buss is the pimp-jeanie), but im really looking forward to how he coaches a team that ISN"T a contender for the first time.

considered by many to be amongst the greatest coaches of our time, i think this tenure with the lakers will show us all what he's really made of, and his place amongst the greatest coaches of all time. and it only cost them 10 mil a year!!!!

I'd give phil props if he started with an group of players and developed them to a championship the way red auerbach, pat riley, chuck daly, rudy t, and pop have done.

well, i'm a little surprised too...his mo is to join a team with the pieces there or easily gotten...i don't think playing gm has been his strength in the past. I think that if there is any coach that can "fix" kobe, it's jackson....who knows though...i'd love to see it blow up. if they're able to get yao to come over, more power to them...you can't argue with his success, his coaching ability or any of that. His smug "i have the zen so you will lose" bullshit, is annoying. I think that given 2-3 years, he'll renew the franchise but la fans are notoriously fickle and I can't wait for the blow ups with the "miracle" doesn't happen next year ;)

Man I lost respect for Phil Jackson the moment he took the Lakers job the first time. I would've liked to see him stay in Chicago or New York and take care of that mess over there.

I liked Phil, but lost respect for him. The best anaology I can put for his resigning with the Lakers' organization is "getting back together with a wife that cheated on you." I lost total respect. It is a disaster waiting to happen.

Salud, Agent, I think we're all hoping for the Fakers to fail.

I refer everyone to my "Phil Jackson is overrated" entry in our lovable NBA blog. If he is to make this Laker edition into a championship contender, I will eat crow. That is if the team stays similar in composition, and they do not recruit Amare or Yao via free agency in the coming years. Lets see what Kobe is made of (instead of him playing second fiddle to another superstar). In short: I just want to see Kobe and Jackson fail miserably (which they will). Cheers to that.

phil would have been a better fit in houston...he has 2 points to the triangle there already in yao and t-mac...

lol...phil is not a fraud. dude can coach, period. the lakers had more talent BEFORE phil even got there, and del harris couldn't get them over the hump. the best coach that i've seen in my lifetime is pat riley. i mean, from coaching an offensive powerhouse in the lakers in the 80's to making a very very untalented knicks team into a defensive juggernaut that almost won a title (a few times). riley's job with the knicks was the best coaching i've seen. one analyst put it nicely when he said that riley was racing a porchse (bulls, rockets)with a tractor and nearly pulled off a victory; now that's da truth. he should coach the rockets. respect prince and omer.

Phil is the biggest fraud in history. The guy had Mike, Pip ... Shaq, Kobe. I can coach them to atleast 8 of those 9 championships. Mike was the coach on the Bulls. On the Lakers, they had so much talent its ridiculous besides Kobe and Shaq .. ie. Fox, Fisher, Horry, Shaw, Harper, etc ... He has no shot to win anything in LA now that Shaq is gone. He is nothing but a phony Zen Buddhist/Psychologist.

Salam. It was a shame that RudyT developed health problems. Anyways, have a great weekend to all.

Being the Rockets are my favorite team in the Western Conference, I think they should go after Pat Riley. I just don't see Riley being a President of B-ball Operations for the rest of his life. He is too great of a coach to never coach again. The Van Gundy Brothers can't coach offense PERIOD.

Desi and Omer, you guys are on the money. I do not know why the Rockets got Van Gundy in the first place. Van Gundy's style fits the Pacers, Celtics, and other eastern teams. The Rockets need a coach that can exploit TMac to his full potential, as well as the rest of the team.

Funk, true the 50s and 60s had all of the fundamentals emphasized. Today's game is becoming disgraceful. In my opinion the peak of basketball skills were in the 70s and 80s. I honestly believe that the 70s (ABA and NBA), along with the 80s were the peak of basketball because of the combination of fundamentals, athleticism, and the "team" game. It gave us some of the best players ever: Bird, Magic, Isiah, MJ, Clyde D, Hakeem, Patrick, DrJ, Moses Malone, The Iceman, Pistol Pete, John Stockton, Chris Mullin, Alex English, Kareem, Sir Charles, Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Joe D, and many others. It also gave us the best shooters ever: Bird, Mark Price, Jeff H, Jim Les, Dales Ellis, Jeff Malone, Craig Hodges, Steve Kerr, etc. Wilt Chamberlin was playing in a league where Russell was the only one tall and strong enough to guard him. It is like me playing ball down in Mexico, I'll be destroying those cats left and right down in the post. Funk, it is sad to see a league where fundamentals are not even acknowledged.

Although Larry Brown's record is not as great as Phil's, Larry is still an amazing coach dating back to the NCAA. The man acknowledges team ball, and defense. Through logic, one should ask: "What if Larry had MJ, Pippen, Rodman, and Kukoc?" As for Phil's return to LA, I am extremely disappointed. Kobe "Snitch/Snake" Bryant is getting a second chance! He had a second chance from his wife, from the law, and now, Phil Jackson. What is next, Shaq giving the moron a second chance too? I hope it is just so Phil can continue to get "some" from Jerry's daughter and nothing more. Uggh, I cannot believe Phil is whipped like that.

just a little history for ya'll....when jackson started coaching, it wasnt in the nba it was in the cba. he coached a team in my hometown called the patroons. they werent a great ball club, but with phil, broke the record for most wins in a seasons and won the championship. he took a group of ok players and made them play great.

Jackson had MJ, Pip, Shaq and Kobe during his years of coaching so obviously he will never get the ultimate respect and admiration from all the NBA fans. I would say Popovich and Brown are the two best coaches in the league (last 10 years). Personally, I think Jackson gets the most out of the talent that he is provided. I thnk he will be scrutinized if he can't get the Lakers to the finals and win NUMBER 10.

man, i hate the lakers...but phil jackson is a badass. The spurs swept the lakers team with kobe and shaq the year before phil got there...the rest is history...phil jackson definitely will have his work cut out for him with the lakers...i'm figuring 2-3 years to really fix the ship but even if he doesn't succeed, it doesn't take away from his accomplishments

I agree with Omer and Wana, until Phil wins a championship with a team that didn't make the playoffs the previous year, I wouldn't even put him in the same class as Riley, Richie Rich Chuck Daly, Brown, Auerbach (the old cigar smoking weezer revolutionized the game i.e. pick and rolls). Remember, the Bulls were already a bona fide contender with Doug Collins at the helm (remember the sick shot MJ did against the Cavs in the 80s?)By the way, Funky Funkadelic is right, Tex Winter invented the Triangle offense, not Phil Jackson. Our b-ball coach in high school always made a point to mention that..........

wowowow...wana, i respect your knowledge of the game, but don't diss that era. people who've been following basketball since the 50's will tell you that the two greatest players (other than MJ) played in that era. bill russell and wilt. sure the players are more skilled today, but they lack true fundamentals (jumpshot, footwork, boxing out, etc.)that those players had. bob ryan actually said that if they were in the league today (he said this in 96') they'd be the two top centers, AND would each be averaging 20 boards/gm. im not sure if i totally agree, but these guys have seen them all, and i'd believe them to an extent. and red won 9 titles :)

Fangio, you made some great points, but is he still up there with Pat Riley, ChuckD, or RudyT? He is a great coach, but is he actually the best of all time. As for Red, he has 9-or 10 rings, but that was in an era where little "pale" men were playing.
