souls?

this has been brought up in two other villages, but i really see it as a philosophical (metaphysical) issue so I thought I'd post it here.

1.) Do you believe souls exist?

If yes:
a.) What is the nature of a soul? (essence? transcendent? etc)
b.) who/what has them?
c.) What is their relation to the body?

If no:
a.) Is there such thing as an individual or are we only different in our accidents?

For all:
does anything "live on" after we die? If so, is it "us"?

www.muslimphilosophy.com the soul in islamic philosophy

"soul" is just a generic trans of "nafs" there being several sorts of nafs. I think spirit corresponds to ruh, although the islamic philosophy dictionary named it as soul as well, along with various different kinds. Check out the "n" and "r" sections. See examples such as "vegetal soul" "animal soul" "universal soul" "human soul" etc

on top of all that, there is a possibility that each container of soul that we talk about is not sufficient to hold on to the power on a soul, thus, the possibility of a soul being contained in multiple containers. This also supports the idea of muliple universes (but that is for some other time).

Why all the animals, specially the bad ones? Well its just the way of recycling/clensing of the generations. All religions forbid eating of humans, why because it has the same soul. But for the generations that have died or were put to death immediatly like the volcanic erruption of popmii, the noah's flood, the tsumani etc.. all those energies are put through filters before re-marketing, the bad ones come as dogs, cats, pigs, voultures etc.. "haram animals", and then some come as horses, camels, cows, goats, chickens.. "halal animals" the hierarchy doesnt stop there, but promotes to all kinds of levels from reptiles, non edible trees/vegitables/plants to full fledge human beings sometimes. :o)

But on earth, daylight returns every day, does the daylight return to the soul as well? Yes, it does, so name it as reincarnation, some janam, and sometime a little bit of recycling is also a part of the next sunrise-next life. Plants, trees, flowers, dogs, cats, pigs, crows, voulters, foxes, hounds, ants, and human containers are one of many that benefit from the soul. Everyone sees daylight.

Yes, I do believe that soul exists. Its nature is that of attraction, power, and light. Only the supreme being has soul/control of soul. The relationship of soul to the body is the same of the daylight and earth. Eventhough we have solar panels and power mechanisms that once we are able to produce any energy from sunlight we think that we got the jist of it, but at the same time at night the sunlight is still there but its just that we dont have access to it anymore. Soul is the energy of the supreme being that is needed to operate the bodily machanics, and death is the night of body i.e. the soul still remains as the sunlight but its the earth/ body that cannot benefit from it anymore. :o)

By this I refer to the person - it's that which I am addressing. Not the body of the person, but the person of the person. It is what some call the soul, or maybe the entity that is someone. That's what I'm talking about. Buddhist thought acknowledges the entity as unique and identifiable, but only as a synergy, not as a permanent article. Death is the dissipation of all that is someone, and this may recombine in other forms with other elements later, but it is not the same as an enduring soul...At least as I understand it.

very true whyme... but so what is the "being in the metaphysical sense"? :)

It's not an illusion. I think it's akin to combining atoms to make molecules - each component has very unique properties that differ even more from the final product of their combination. Hydrogen and oxygen are two highly flammable gasses with traditional physical properties (increasing density at lower temperatures) but they combine to form a distinctly imflammable liquid that actually is less dense in its solid state (ice) than in its liquid state. In this way, the essence of water lies not in its parts, but how they behave when combined - but neither does that entirely explain it. Theres something unique to "waterness" beyond the sum of its parts. Extrapolate this concept to the person, and not just the body, but the being in the metaphysical sense, and I think that's the jist of it. Buddhism is quite unique in this regard. But bear in mind that some modern buddhist thought has changed itself a bit to incorporate a "soul-like" concept, probably for the same reason other religions need one: people need a sense of permanence. True buddhism is not actually a religion exactly, it's more appropriately a philosophy.

i did not study buddhism much - i just remember the later buddhist idea of us being bound to a wheel and waiting to break free - and this this world is a "dream state". but what really was interesting was jainism... where the "soul" (as it is "breathed" into us by God in their scripture as well as the Jewish, ZChristian, etc creation stories) when the body dies, returns to God. So that our soul being implanted in us is His exhailing and our bodily death is Him inhailing... and then the "old" souls get mixed together and we get "born again" in sorts. interesting, but not my cup of tea. :)

so "whyme", you think that we do not have souls - as a spiritual essence that lives on? What about your essence... my "Katie-ness" that differentiates me from other humans and even other Katie's? An illusion?

The buddhists believe that there is no soul, that one is instead a confluence of 5 principles while one exists, and death occurrs when these disassociate (or something like this). I think this is a brutally honest view of human destiny. Our concept of soul stems from the classical greek lineage in our religious thought (even Islam has classical greek essences) implying that the seen world is an imperfect reflection of an ideal world (the forms)- this is when reduced to simplest concepts. I think the soul idea persists becuase we are uncomfortable with the concept of annihilation; we desire permanence even after our demise. I don't know, but this seems arrogant if you ask me.
