i love spa. it has to be the best track in the world. eau rouge is breathtaking....
Of course he is a worthy champion. However, Raikkonen would is more worthy. If Schumacher is such a big fan of Alonso, why would he say that he would look forward to driving with a driver of Raikkonen ability in 2007, if he signs for Ferrari? I believe that statement reflects his true opinion... And I hope Raikkonen stay with McLaren...
Michael Schumacher said Alonso will be a wortthy world champion, thats enough for me , and by the way im a big Mclaren fan i hope they win the constructors championship
Clearly we are both hearing different people.
Just because the McLarens have been prone to breakdowns, does not mean that Alonso finishes ahead of Raikonnen when one is discussing who is the best driver.
From the top of my head, most of the veteran comentators of F1 - on different tv channels, former World-Champions Jackie Stewart and Mika Hakkinen, Jean Todt and Ross Brawn of Ferrari have all stated that Raikkonen as the best driver. That is evidence enough for me.
I beg to differ , most motor racing commentators and journalists believe Alonso is the best driver in formula 1,we will have to wait for the end of the season when all the formula 1 publications and reviews hit our newstands, then and only then will we see who the journalist and more importantly whom the CURRENT AND EX-DRIVERS view as the number one driver of the season,no doubt Raikoonen will get some votes as he has done a good job but im sure Alonsa will be just as the best driver of the season.
Again, I must politely disagree. Raikonnen has the smoothness that the Great Mika Hakkinen effortlessly possessed. During races this season, he is consistantly the fastest man on the circuit lap after lap. The only reason Alonso can take it easy is because he has had such a large gap from early on in the championship when the qualifying pace of the McLarens was nowhere. The Renaults have no other car that is faster apart from the silver duo which allows them to turn down the revs on their engines towards the end of grand prix which has further enhanced reliability.
There is not an atom of doubt in my mind that Raikonnen is the the most complete driver in Formula 1 today. That opinion is shared by many, many people involved with the sport, both past and present.
No doubt, as you imply, future duals between these two drivers is something that can only be good for the sport.
Raikonnen is quicker over one lap,but over a race distance Alonsa is better,he reminds me of a young Schumi,he has such an experianced head on young shoulders, doesnt hardly make a mistake and is the most natural driver in F.1 after Schumi,It would be frightening to think what he could achieve in a Mclaren, and like Schumi after a long race he appears as if he has gone for a sunday stroll, many more championships to follow i think.
While you may be correct, I disagree. I believe Raikonnen is the better driver. Any time he has come neck and neck with Alonso - and it has been quite rare - Raikonnen has always come out on top, apart from when his retired from the race which was not his fault. In most of these, he was leading.
Secondly, McLaren did not have a dominant car all season. After the first few races in which Renault were dominant, McLaren and Renault were basically neck and neck until about race eight or nine when a gap started to emerge. In that time Raikonnen absolutely killed Alonso.
Thirdly, Raikonnen has been a title contender in previous seasons but, as this year, mechanical unreliablilty has let him down. He has been an almost faultless driver. The two mistakes he made in the season were:
i. Flat spotting his tyre in the European Grand Prix
ii. The spin last week after his left-rear tyre had to be changed due to delamination and he had to go and chase to look for a result.
Alonso has never really been pressured. He had a large cushion from the start of the season that has allowed him to drive along without the need to take risks.
Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying that Fernando is a bad driver. On the contrary, one does not win a championship by being useless. He is good. However, I firmly believe that Raikonnen is better. It is not a case of Alonso winning the championship, but more of McLaren-Mercedes throwing it away. And, in the end, that seems to have been the telling difference.
theres no way of knowing who is the better raikonnen or alonso as alonso has only made 1 mistake all season and also is in a slower car, raikonen has had too many retirements else he would me way ahead, next year Montoya will give Raikonen a run for his money as he is improving all the time
Rain is expected during the race. Montoya has stated that he is prepared to move over and aid Raikonnen and that any such decision is his own.
Raikonnen has only made two mistakes this year, which is natural as he has always been chasing the championship. If he had not retired/had 10 place penalties during the year, he would have mathematically won the championship by now.
I believe he is the best driver in F1 today.
if it stays dry there can only be two winners raikonen or montoya,im looking forward to it as raikonen has had the better of montoya in qualifying, having said that montoya was injured and missed a few races only on plus its his first season at mclaren, now he is getting used to things at mclaren , he has a good record at what surely is the no1 race track,im expecting great things from him,if he cant beat raikonen here then he cant beat him anywhere,
also i take my hat of to Alonso, what an awesome performance even though he is in an inferior car, sure the mclarens have had a lot of retirements but he is always there right behind them,i think all season he has only made one mistake,a worthy champion, next year should be interesting as the mclarens should sort there reliability problems.
