Could someone explain how copying random squiggly letters prevent spamming without going too technical??

oh i c.. ie they are stupid...

Because spamming is usually sent through a spider ( a program that searches for addresses). These suiggles cannot be read by a program - a real live person has to read them and enter them in to confirm it's real.
