Speech Therapy....

In UK there's:

The so-called 'Cockney' accent

'Posh' Londoner accent

'Brummi' accent

and so on.....

Me: I had speech therapy almost all of my childhood hence my accent is pure 'Posh' Londoner. I have never been influenced by others when it comes to speech or accent.

Im really the same with everyone BUT depends on my mood, the tone of my voice REALLY changes esp when I couldnt talk or hear till I was 8 years old...

Dont get me wrong, Im no different from ppl in general NOW Alhamdulilah BUT I have a habit to THINK when speaking to make sure my speech is clear, this could be because I am shy or nervous or tired and whatnots! Otherwise, I always speak proper Queens English when Im in a relaxed mode... I find it really odd when a person speaks in cockney accent as Im quite self absorbed with the way I speak or learnt on my OWN.

Okay enough of confusing you guys about me!

....Do you guys change your tone of speech and accent in each surrounding?

.

Very confused bunch of accents.. posh pakistani (thx to my childhood in pakistan).. strange fake yankee (went to an american school in saudi).. mixture of posh and 'accentless' brit accent (from my years in the uk).. can be irritating when my american twang appears out of nowhere.. surprising me and the listener.. on the plus side.. it makes people listen to you in business meetings.. cos they don't know what accent your next sentence might be in! :P

As much I try to control it, my New York accent comes out with some words still. And I think we all change the tone in our voice base on who we are speaking with. The tone I use with my brother is much different than the one I use when speaking to my sister.

I had the "cockney" accent growing up in the UK. It's gone now, but I can fake it so well, no one would be able to tell. I miss my brit accent:(

Tariqtheindian, Im so glad u brought up the throat or nasal prounouciation as that has been a big impact in my during childhood days with speech therapy! Good one.

Tariq, I used to do the whole "uhh" thing a lot too. A good way to get rid of that is to just think about your audience. Odds are they know you (if it's for school) or they came to hear you speak (which would imply they will agree with what you have to say though not always.) I did that and the "uhh's" and "umm's" stopped for me.

People say I fall into the ABCD catergory. So I speak with a Midwest American accent, which really isn't an accent at all. I don't think my tone changes at all when I talk to different groups of people. Most people in America think I'm a terrorist anyway and don't talk to me ;)

I beleive you ST. Different people may have different reasons, I agree to that. But what I wrote is based on very close observation.

Horizon: you might be right...but honestly, I didnt even know I had an accent until some one pointed it out to me. So for me it happens naturally. Believe me, there are some words that come out of my mouth that caucasians cant even understand ;) My word pronounciation comes out very differently...

When it comes to my bro, when he is with his freinds, he gets 'cockney' and with others very posh.... he enjoys it, a fun hobby for him.. actually hes talented! for me its always been a communication skills as a little child so I always find it enlightening to learn of others speech and where they are coming from....

Maybe its some sort of consciousness..Either to ensure that the other person understands well or do you think it has to do with anything as a complex? I am not pointing to either of you but I know quite a few people who suffer from either a superiority complex or an inferiority complex and somehow they tend to change their accent (depends who the other person is) either to impress him/her or to ensure himself/herself of the ability to communicate. Just an observation.

My apologies to you Amina :) So i thought about it a little and I think sometimes accents come out because people feel like they need to fit in or have people understand them better? I am not sure..I could be wrong. But I do have an accent when I talk to desi people...it happens Subconsciously!!
