STANDING ALONE IN MECCA by Asra Q. Nomani

This is a coooool book. It is simply the raison d'etre of Asra Q. Nomani of how she overcomes the trials and ordeals of her life to make sense of the world for future generations of Muslims. All as a single mother. She is searching for the same answers as we are.

You should read it if the following topics interest you;

? Danny Pearle murder
? Hajj pilgrimage pro?s and cons including the pilgrimage to Jerusalem
? Contrasting Muslim women identities, country by country
? Growing up as a Muslim girl in America
? Mosque politics and patriarchy
? Islamic reform movement
? Family expectations
? Stigmatization by fellow Muslims
? Muslim women?s rights within the masjid and bedroom

Almost finished the book and have learned plenty already. Has anyone else started to read this book? I would like some hear some feedback.

Ohhhhh man! I'm almost finished the book now and I can't believe how the masjid board members during a meeting gave her and her mom the full inquisition! Ewwww.

AvaS you are right. Some idiots would also say that she is trying to seek publicity just to sell her book and make money. They have no clue as to what it is like to be a single mother. From what I know, it is the publishers who make their cut first as most authors do not live the glam life.

i'm part of a women's interfaith bookgroup. the 2 friends who recommended the book are from that group. ava, i think a lot of people expect nomani's book to be one long apology for her single motherhood. even though i understand why she does't regret having her son i was a bit surprised to read her views on chastity. but that is not the focus of the book. 'standing alone in mecca' must be read as one woman's personal journey towards faith and not a primer on islam.

Thanks for this review and the feedback Priya and Baganoush. I have this book on my shelf to read along with so many more. Inshallah I hope to get to read it soon and look forward to sharing my thoughts with you. Again thanks for the wonderful feedback about the book. Of course there are some dreadful comments made by some people on her webpage (Nomani's) and so these were very good to read. Thanks again.

BTW. Who were your two non-Muslim friends that recommended this book?

Priya, the Hajj stories are amazing. I couldn't believe how worried she was about being a single mother and at the same time her baby was everyone's favourite throughout the Hajj! lol

I love the way she writes as well. She does have a poetic quality in her prose that gives you a sense of being there right with her. Asra, is very poignant and articulate as well. I am happy that she became an author because of how well situated she is within the US press service and the contacts she has with prominent American converts. She has good chance to become a top Muslim author.

i read this because it was recommended by 2 non muslim friends of mine who were extremely excited about it. i loved it, especially the first half. reading about hajj from a female perspective (rare in itself) and especially that of a mother was eye opening. contrary to the way she's been portrayed to me until now, nomani actually seems quite respectful of those with more conservative views than her (like the people in her hajj group). it was inspiring to see someone have the courage to change something that we all see and dislike. on the whole i'm very glad i read her book. despite having very different views i could relate to many of her experiences; it made the book very engrossing and relevant to me.
