I dont know about other states, but here in NY we just completed the Math State Exams for Grades 3-8. What a load of stress.

How do you all feel about these State Exams? What are your districts doing about meeting the goals of these exams? Do you supplement a great deal or stick to your curriculum? How many of your schools literally shut down for State testing and scoring?

What do you think the effects really are for our children?

In Canada you can exempt certain students for the provincial testing. Students who are very high needs or in the very beginning stages of ESL. Though most ESL and special needs students can write the test and get accomadations. Theprincess doesn't the state provide accomdations?

They don't give you room to expand or alter their curriculm???

whats even stupider is their alternative state exams for students who are severly disabled. I teach kids who are not diploma bound due to having severe disabilities. this year i was teaching geometry and the novel "red badge of courage" to a child with down syndrome who can't even write his name.....how stupid is our department of education getting?????????

I am in Canada and we have provincial testing for Grade 3, 6 and Grade 9. There is big stress on getting these test scores up. I actually work with Grade 3 students. The students have to do alot of intense math and language. It is really stressful for the teacher and students. Throughout the year we are preparing students for this test.

while in the states, I worked with kindergarteners to 2nd graders. I don't remember them shutting down school for exams. But that was a while back. Now I teach esl overseas.

I am in NJ doing my field work at a fifth grade class.We literally shut down and did a lot of language and math skills about 2 weeks prior to the exam. The teachers were all frustrated as were the students. They are just gald its over and back to the curriculum.
How was your experience? Where do you teach?
