As-salaamu'alaikum wa rahmatullah,
We pray this reaches you in the best of health and in an increasing state of imaan...
We recently found out that a group, on the campus of UC Irvine, is planning to 'unveil' the cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad, salallahu alayhi wasalam, and continue the slander and defamation of him at an event next Tuesday evening. What we are asking everyone to do, is call up the chancellor at UC Irvine and explain why this cannot be permitted to take place on campus. All the major news organizations in the United States have excercised responsibility, caution, and restraint in showing the cartoons, and we have to make clear that there is absolutely no way this can be tolerated.
If we show a strong enough response to this, and the administration is able to see how many people are against upset and offended, insha'Allah we can get them to take some action and prevent the false depiction of the Prophet saaw from being shown and this slander and defamation from taking place. Please take a few minutes, read the guidelines we have listed below, and give the administration a call (the number is listed at the bottom)...Remember to leave a message in case you dont get through. May Allah swt reward each of you who are undertaking this task for His sake, and put this in your scale of good deeds. Here are some guidelines to go by when you speak to chancellor of UC Irvine:
* Most important thing: Remember why you're doing this. You're doing this for the sake of Allah swt, and because of your love for Him and His messenger (saaw), who we are supposed to love more than anyone else. Keeping that in mind... you shouldn't be nervous.
* Start by introducing yourself, including your name, whether you're a student, where you attend school, etc...
*Mention that you're calling in regards to the event the College Republicans are holding on campus next Tuesday where the cartoons falsely and maliciously depicting the prophet Muhammad (salallahu alayhi wasalam) are going to be shown, and defamation and slander of his character will be taking place..
*Remember to stay respectful and courteous throughout the whole thing... But you may decide to take one of a couple approaches:
- First you can be firm and let him know you're upset and astonished that none of the administration has stepped in to try and stop this event from happening, and that they cannot allow something like this to happen after seeing the response it has brought from the global community.
*Make sure you mention the difference between hate speech and free speech... this speech is very clearly inciting hate, violence and discrimnation on campus, and therefore cannot be allowed. This is a direct attack on our faith... other student groups speaking out against the cartoons have recieved hate mail and death threats from people using this as reason to attack Islam and Muslims.
- The other approach you can take is a softer one, mention that you are worried about what this will do to the atmosphere on campus... Mention why Muslims are so offended by this, and how you personally feel... that you've seen what this had led to throughout the world, that it is offending and provoking a people and spreading Islamaphobia on campus, and there's no telling what will happen as a result... that you feel the campus really should do something to stop it from taking place.
*Mention that this event is being done clearly with the purpose of inciting hate, discrimination, and violence... there is no benefit to the general campus by having such an inflamatory event. Again, you can tie in that we've seen what this has brought about throughout the world, and must not leave any room for such things to happen once more, and especially not in our own community.
*Mention that all the major media sources across the country have exercised responsibility, and have not shown the cartoons out of respect and fear of the reaction they would bring.
*Keep in mind you may not actually get in touch with him, in which case, leave a brief message explaining why you are calling, your name, whether you're a student or community member, and how you can be contacted about this...
*In the case that you don't get through to him, mention that you will be expecting, and looking forward to hearing back from him in regards to this matter, and hopes that it will be taken seriously by the adminstration.
* Some additional things you can mention or include are:
why Muslims are so offended (not only because the manner in which it depicts him, but furthermore because it is not permitted to show any images or depcitions of any of the prophets) but be sure to include that such a thing could not be tolerated or allowed regardless of which religion or culture it is trying to slander, defame and disrespect.
