strait is the gate

The village pic, illustrates the wonderful cover of strait is the gate written by Andr? Gide.

a book of a short tale of Jerome, a young boy who writes for us his love story with his cousin Alissa. From a child age to adulthood, he desribes the moments they lived, close and afar.

Written in the landscapes of france, we are not involved in the world around them except the mind of these two children/adults whose world is but each others company.
At such an early age, their minds are encompassed with poetry, and such thoughts it confuses the true nature of love.
The love story ends so suddenly, that by the end of the book we feel an entire century, a 100 years of solitude have gone by when only 25 years of their life has passed.
It only now helps me accept, how at such a young age your mind and soul can be aged beyond thought.

A very beautiful and painful story, i cant help by think of Goethe in the sorrows of young werther.

i recommend this book, short (128 pages) and satisfying.

yes , it wasnt as sad as werther, but it had a long nostalgic pain element which carried all through the book.
there was no period where we had hope (As werther believs he does when he goes to the ball with her), but here we never understand what love is.

yes i believe the cousin element was interesting. Asian culture now resembles closely western/european times a 100 years ago, where marriage was such an institution.

i missed werther, i think its why i picked up this book to try and carry on that element.

a love story amongst cousins. with all the betrothement (whatever the word is) that goes on inour cultre, that seems very apt.
