Struggles Weighing Me Down

I don't want to get into too many personal details, but I need some help/support. Here is the long story as short as I can make it:

I was on high dosages of steroids for a solid 3 years, ranging from 12.5mg to 50mg (mostly the latter). Let's just say that I gained weight as I was very steroid responsive. I had offers to try out for the football team but turned them down :)

Anyway, I have been free of the damn 'roids for about 9 months. I don't know if it is my body or the long term effects...I know that the weight will not come off as fast as it was put on. But, I have been working out 2 or 3 times a week with a personal trainer since February. I have been doing cardio 3-4 times a week, too.

I have not seen any changes. The weight has not come down. I know that muscle weighs more than fat and blah blah...The trainer says that it looks like I've made progress, but...who is trying on the clothes? Pants that fit me before I was allowed to work out don't fit across my thighs anymore! I'm not a German speedskater! I can tell that I have more muscle and I feel strong but....I want to lose the weight!

I was talking to a couple of people and they said it seems like the trainer is used to training athletes (had gone to the Olympics to help train) and not used to helping people slim down/lose weight. Someone also mentioned that doing the treadmill is better than what I do - the elliptical.

Nutrition is always good. The doctor has me on a monitored meal plan (I don't like to call it a "diet") and it gets boring but I stick to it. Okay, so I cheated last night, but it was my birthday! :)

Anyway, I'm very upset and frustrated. I think I just needed to vent.

Thank you!

Beela

What kind of steroids were u using? Did you do your PCT when you came off your cycle? What were the dosages you were on? you mention 50mg, but 50mg per week? a day?. Also post some stats, height, weight, waist and so on. I dont think you are retaining anything from your cycle and your normal test production should have kicked in by now. All depends on what you were taking.

Thanks for the encouraging words!

Cat in the Hat, sure you can be my PT, but do you fly to Calgary??? I don't binge it and I just had my recent blood tests, etc. Now I'm waiting on some allergy testing. Maybe I'm allergic to apples or something, who knows?

Staphaureus, congratulations on the weight loss...care to share how you did it?

I had a client who had the same problem. We were running 5km three times per week and weight training for the other three. It was intense...I mean I was losing weight but she wasn't. I asked her to get her thyroid checked but the doctor found nothing. Her problem was that she wasn't being honest with me and finally confessed to being a closet binge eater. I'm not saying that you may have the same problem but by being honest with your trainer, let him/her know what you're feeling about the results so far and either do a reassessment or discuss other options. You've been training since February...you should see something for God's sake! If I were you, I would look for a new trainer...like me ;o).

First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone and remind you that at least you are healthy now---the weight will come off...just give it time and continue to burn those cals. Although, I'd offer that "diet" is almost mORE important than what type of cardio you are doing. I strongly believe in portion control, cutting sugars, and not eating after 7 p.m. but talk to your doc. s/he would know best.
GOOD LUCK!

Aragorn, I do see an endo doc (and various other -ologists) who is monitoring me for bone loss. They never seem to want to check my thyroid levels...but all my other regular generic blood tests are fine according to them, but I don't know how to interpret the data.

What is T4?

I try not to lose hope...it's just sometimes discouraging.

Thanks!

Sis, I'd go to the doctor and get all your hormone levels checked. After being on steroids for 3 years your endocrine system must be a wreck. Find out your thyroid levels because if your thyroid is even slightly low you can get some T4 to increase your thyroid levels. In the mean time just keep doing what you're doing and keep us posted regarding your results. Above all, don't lose hope because as the Qur'aan says, "none lose hope other than an inequitable people.."
