Sunday Book Bazaars...

Freer Hall is the landmark building of Karachi. This building had been the host of many art festivals and it also has a library which is one of the few large public libraries in Karachi. On Sundays, one can see many gay guys in the park around the historic building. Freer Hall is also a popular destination among book lovers of Karachi. Each Sunday the same park hosts a book bazaar which used to attract crowds until the United States announced its war against terrorism. Since then, the book bazaar had been KARACHI: Book Bazaar closure?>closed by authorities many times on the request of US consulate.

Unfortunately, the US consulate in Karachi is currently located right in front of the Frere Hall. The US consulate in Karachi had always been on the hit list of terrorist organizations. It is dangerous to roam around the US consulate since you don?t know when some crazy suicide bomber decides to kill a few Pakistanis outside the US consulate building.

The strict security measures taken by the local authorities have made it difficult for people to visit Freer hall. You can?t visit the park via public transport and sometimes the policemen do not even allow the private vehicles inside the park. I don?t know whether the park is still the gay hangout or not but I have heard that the book bazaar is about to die.

The same shopkeepers are now looking for a hope in the KARACHI: ?Cultural street? organized by Arts Council?>Kocha-i-saqafat, a street festival organized by the Arts Council and Government of Sindh?s tourism and culture department on Sundays at main M.R. Kiyani road. The Kocha stands for neighborhood and Siqafat means Culture. The Kocha-i-saqafat is divided into art corner, book bazaar and crafts portions. The book bazaar also has used books and prices are much lower than regular bookstores in the town. Governor of Sindh visited the festival on its third Sunday. Since the beginning this festival has attracted hundreds of people. I haven?t attended it so far even though I live just five minutes walk away from the Kocha-e-Saqafat.

The Kocha-i-Saqafat is a nice step but I think that we should also try to save the Sunday book bazaar of the Freer Hall. But, the survival of this book bazaar depends on the shifting of US consulate and it seems like CDGK and Government of Sindh has no options to offer the Consulate. Due to the upcoming elections, I don?t think there would be any progress on this issue in near future.
