If she is a Christian and believes in One god, she doesn't actually need to convert to Islam (revert).

She should take the shahada if she believes in Allah swt, His Book (The Holy Qur'an), His Messenger, the Angels, the Afterlife and Prophets.

I also understand where you are coming from; but I think she will be responsible for it moreso than him because it is her choice to make. It isn't like he is purposely misguiding her, it is that he doesn't happen to be religious himself unfortunately.

Perhaps if she converts on this basis now, it may lead to something more meaningful later, Allah swt knows. In a sort of mixed blessing, I have seen lots of converts marry not-so-religious folks when they are very new to the religion and it is fine for them then, but later on as they grow in faith it becomes a big problem.

If that doesn't happen for your friend, then perhaps the two will stay happily married nominal Muslims and how ever Allah swt judges nominal Muslims would apply to them both in the Hereafter; Allah swt is Just and Merciful.

As for apostasy - from someone who converted and then turns back - that probably simply means they didn't know what they were doing to begin with or didn't think about it enough to begin with - and again, we have no certainty about their fates as compared to anyone else, we just know Allah swt is Just and Merciful.

In the short, people have to make their own decisions. The Prophet's (saw) duty was only to inform people; ours is alike.

To date, I have not met someone who reverted to islam without really believing in it; they may have come upon it by falling in love, but the decision to revert in everyone I've met has been genuine.

I don't think it is any business of ours to second-guess someone's motives in converting.

There are numerous stories in hadith about the Prophet (saw) exhorting others to accept the word of anyone who said shahada even if it was on the battlefield to save their necks......

There are two levels (well, many really) of belief. There is being Muslim and being Momeen. A person can be Muslim just by saying shahada and basically meaning it, even if there is little depth in it - even if the love of Allah swt is small, etc.

To be a momeen, though, the outward aspects of the deen must be internalized so that they are not just lip service or going through the motions but are sincere and from the heart and with pure intention.

One can be a Muslim without being Momeen.

Incidentally, in the Qur'an whenever Allah swt is addressing the Muslims (submitters), it is through the Prophet (saw) "Say (O Muhammad)!" But when Allah swt is addressing the Momeneen (believers), then He speaks to them directly.

Hmmm, I believe there are some hadiths about this. I will look and see if I can find them in Bukhari and get back to you...
