Talking Speed Cameras
From NorthWest Magazine, Issue 99 May 2005
" The old trick of slowing down as you pass a speed camera to then instantly speed up again, is no longer going to work if a pioneering scheme by Transport for London being tested in Hampstead proves successful. The 'intelligent' speed trap will catch thousands of drivers as groups of cameras track cars over a wide area, instead of flashing them in one spot. It will be impossible to outwit them, say the designers, as cameras record each car's number plate and 'talk' to each other via radio-wave technology. If found speeding, drivers will have to pay a fine of ?60. The system will be used to rigidly enforce speed limits in 20mph zones, with the experiment being carried out for one year at either end of Mansfield Road NW3, near the Royal Free Hospital. Fines will not be issued until the scheme has been fully approved by the Home Office."
