Teaching Our Kids

I was wondering, at what age should parents teach thier kids about sexual abuse or harrassment? Not only by an adult but also by other kids. Sometimes kids between the ages of 9-12 ask thier younger siblings/friends to show thier private parts, so I was wondering when should we start teaching our kids about this. What is the appropriate age and how to do this?

I think you need to address it as soon as it comes up. But don't freak out! You gotta becareful and understand no matter what they may repeat or have seen they are still children and very innocent.. chances are they have no comprehension at all of what they've seen and haven't even given it any thought either. If you suddenly start telling them things you'll be putting those ideas in their heads yourself!

In regards to protecting them from potential abuse I'd tell them that their private parts or even the reason why we wear underwear is cause certain parts of our bodies are private and you're not supposed to show them to anyone nor is anyone supposed to touch them?!

At the same time let em know you love em and always will no matter what.. so if anything is bothering them ever or they want to ask anything at all ..its ok you'll always be there for them.

dont u think its more about how we 'trim' the information that's already aroudn the kids? media, oustide parks, overheard conversations of adults etc ... as a kid i remember tosn of this info. available on the TV instead ofanywhere else ... and i m talking about mostly desi channels...

You're right about the sex education starting relatively early (though at a basic level).. ie. what isn't allowed when someone else asks you to do something... i think it's important information which you can't leave out.

It would have to be at a basic level .. eg. my kid is only 6! I remember my english friends saying they'd been given kids' books on the subject (parts of the body, how babies are made) at age 3! and forgotten it all immediately..

I think starting from a similar book and taking sections out to talk about might work.... and also to keep talking about the subject periodically (don't know how often though - and be prepared for the inevitable where do babies come from question..) to make sure they're not confused/ don't have questions/ and to make sure they know they can talk to you about anything that's happening in their life no matter what and that that they can trust you...

Abusers often tell kids they will be in big trouble if they tell anyone.. our job is to ensure our kids are able to tell us if something is happening/ if they have any fears regarding this.
