Temporay Marriages and Prostitution in Iran

This is one of many Shia practices that I deplore (no offense to any Shias in this village)...

Following information taken from www.iran-daily.com

Temporary Marriage Benefits Outlined

"A parliamentarian described temporary marriage as a legal alternative to street prostitution.

Morteza Fazl-Ali gave assurances that the solution would help scale down the problems created by street prostitution--a vicious phenomenon in the Iranian society where a large number of religious, cultural and Islamic guidance and publicity organizations are active, ILNA reported.

According to Fazl-Ali, there are two kinds of street women. ?Those who have a tendency toward debauchery for making profits and those who are forced into prostitution by misery and poverty,? he analyzed.
He insisted that women belonging to the second category be identified and separated from the first group. ?They can then be referred to Imam Khomeini Relief Committee, State Welfare Organization and other similar entities to receive welfare support,? he noted.

Fazl-Ali stated that a number of street women are managed by corrupt gangs who take undue advantage of social conditions. He reiterated that street women should be collected from Tehran, warning that public concerns are growing over the spread of street prostitution.

He criticized the organizations in charge of curbing prostitution for their laxity and said, ?They either have a lenient approach or only work out temporary solutions.?
He called for the formation of an organization that would coordinate all efforts in checking the malady.

Ruling out the establishment of houses of ill repute as was common in Iran during the former regime or is in other countries, he said, ?Authorizing prostitution is contrary to the principles of a religious society.? Fazl-Ali further called for facilitating marriages by providing employment and housing.

The MP said temporary marriage provides a solution to the social malady and called for more efforts to inculcate the culture within the society."

Kaniza: Your response to Aragorn...well I just want to say that when men were dying in wars on the battleground back in the day and to curb prostitution, men were permitted to take up to 4 wives (this is the reasoning behind the Islamic custom of men being allowed to take up to 4 wives, as far as I know) but I don't think there is any connection here with the "temporay marriages" issue. Maybe the two concerns are related.

Kaniza: Good! For a second I thought you lost your mind!

Point noted, Aragorn. Thanks for clarifying.

Yes, Muta`ah is har?m, however, you guys need to be real careful with how you talk about it. The reason being is that some eminent Sah?bah such as Ibn `Abb?s (rad? All?h? `anh?m?) were of the opinion that in some cases it remained valid. So please don't refer to it as a "crock of bull" or "prostitution". If you consider it prostitution than you are saying that the Prophet (sallall?h? `alayh? wa sallam) permitted prostitution for a short time, God forbid.

So, yes, we all agree that:

- The practice is now forbidden.
- It was only permitted shortly when certain Muj?hid?n from the Sah?bah requested that they be permitted to castrate themselves rather than face long periods of time without their wives.

However, we must treat this fiqh mas'alah with maturity and respect as it is something the Prophet (sallall?h? `alayh? wa sallam) at one time permitted.

I'm glad y'all are in agreement. Again, the intent isn't to offend any Shias in the village but in fact alot of Shia beliefs just rub me the wrong way since they are not Sunni beliefs and more importantly, not RATIONAL ones especially as applied to contemporary times. I'm a very thought-oriented person and if something (religion, religious sect, religious belief/thought/doctrine, etc.) doesn't make sense, I question it 'til the cows come home. Islam and more so, Sunni Islam, is the real path set down by our holy Prophet PBUH, one that is fair, unequivocally logical and rational, and one that answers all queries that the human mind holds.

As far as temporary marriages, there is just no justification for them especially nowadays. If this practice is still being carried out in remote parts of the Shia world, it is cheuvanistic, completely self-serving, demeaning to womenfolk, and goes against the grain of true Islamic teachings as set forth in the Koran and by our Prophet PBUH.

In a nutshell, temporary marriages are a ***crock of bull!***

Whoa now hold up sis! Temporary marriage is haraam! And contrary to popular thought it was Muhammad (SAAS) himself who outlawed it FOREVER! Once he (SAAS) has made a decision, we are not ones to outlaw it. The hukm for mutah initially was in regards to jihad, and not every day interactions.
