THE BOOKER PRIZE

Two Penguin titles just got shortlisted for the Booker Prize: Sebastian Barry's A LONG LONG WAY and Zadie Smith's ON BEAUTY.
Also shortlisted are Julian Barnes (ARTHUR AND GEORGE), Kazuo Ishiguro (NEVER LET ME GO), John Banville (THE SEA) and Ali Smith (THE ACCIDENTAL).
The only book I've read from this list is the Barry. I should read Smith, since she is one of our own. Anyone read any of these guys?

so after disparaging kazuo's slow pace, I finally finished the remains of the day. surprisingly, it was totally worth it. that kaz sure knows how to paint a delicate portrait with words.

arther and george would get my vote. Well thought out and well constructed.

i actually loved 'white teeth' by zadie smith. its a bit slow in the beginning but it picks up soon enough. i found myself laughing out loud on trains as i read this. it was a rather interesting and insightful commentary of life as it is for a lot of second generation british muslims.

Yeah. I love Coetzee. We publish him in the US and he won the Nobel Prize a couple of years back. His new novel, SLOW MAN, is wonderful; it's pubbing in the States later this month.

Haven't read any of their new stuff, but Zadie's White Teeth was okay, if you like the "I'm a confused brown person living in England" kinda thing. Kazuo's all about the magical realism in The Unconsoled and The Remains of the Day was just too slow for me to finish. Hope the new ones are better.
