The bridge
I was reading a book titled, 1001 things you hate to love and Star Trek was one of them. But it talked about something that was really appealing. Theysaid that the original Star Trek was the first TV series of its kind to actually deal with space without destroying aliens and other planets just for the sake of it. Rather they were dealing with real life issues at the time like discrimination, racism, war etc while also addressing the exploration of human kind, bridging the gap between races etc. Other programs on TV were too close to the real world to appeal to the public, but in Star Trek people found escape and at the same time they could also relate to the utopian ideals that the series presented.
I guess as the Star Trek went on and digressed slowly to big budget stunts, and special effects, there still was something about it that attracted me towards it. The hope that one day there will be no poverty, hunger, or unjust fights. What do you guys think, do series like Star Trek really help in bridging gaps between different groups of people or is it too much to ask?

Star Trek (except for maybe Enterprise), particularly TOS and TNG always addressed moral issues that were big issues at the time in real life and provided hope and perspective for millions of people. Lots of people have commented how the vision of the future Star Trek offered in which people got along, etc., made them do something to further that aim, or made them study and work in science, etc. Or how seeing someone of their race/ethnicity on TV inspired them to dream big.
Culturally, I think most sociologists would say that Star Trek was part of the movement to eradicate racism - one which still needs moving, btw!
