THE BURDA (POEM OF THE CLOAK) PROJECT - UK
LOOKING FOR SISTERS FOR FORTHCOMING THE BURDA (POEM OF THE CLOAK) PROJECT
Ulfah Arts has received a commission from Birmingham City Council
to develop a new piece of artistic work. Ulfah Arts has chosen to
work with the The Burda or The poem of the cloak. This is a
masterpiece of Arabic literature that contains 10 sections,
a total of 160 verses. Its an Islamic faith based poem
about the love for Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his life.
It is sung everywhere in the Muslim world from Morocco to
Malaysia. Written 700 years ago by an Egyptian called
Imam Sharafuddin Busiri (c1211-1294).
This performance of the Burda by the Ulfah Collective will be
a rare performance of the relationship of women with this unique poem.
We would like to share ideas that would form a contemporary artistic
performance as a tribute to the poem that will be developed
and showcased later throughout 2007.
The Burda (Poem of the Cloak) is a major project for Ulfah Arts
with ambitions to take this work as widely as possible. We are
keen to encourage women to get involved in the various stages
of developing the performance. This can be idea generation
to actually performing.
