The Claim of 'Syed' Caste

Why is there a fixation with the concept of being Syed in the Pakistani-Indian subconscious?

Should I feel as if I am an inferior Muslim because my ancestors weren't directly related to the Prophet (S)? What difference or benefit does it confer upon you to be a descendant on some distant level?

I was under the impression that apparently only daughters survived him to prevent this obession with lineage?

Additionally, can you really verify that you are indeed Syed?

Assalaamu alaykum

In Islam, we are all considered equal to one another, save in terms of piety.

There is no 'caste' system ie a hiearchy of one set of people being any better than another. This is a an aspect of Hindu tradition, as I'm sure many are aware.

Rather, people are known by their tribal origins, as was customary in Arab lands eg the Quraysh. No one tribe was considered any 'better' than another.

I wouldn't dispute with anyone who claimed to be a syed, for, they may well be. If they aren't, then they are the ones who are incorrectly claiming to be descendants of the Prophet (pbuh).

So you should definately not feel inferior to anyone, regardless of their tribal origins.

Rather, we should concentrate on fulfulling our obligations of being muslim and strive towards a better character as we can all improve in one way or another.

Wa salaam :)
