The Essence of Dorkdom
A few years ago my mom asked me what "dork" means. I proceeded to explain its synonymous meaning with "geek." Of course she then asked me to define that, as well.
Merriam Webster suggests "dork" may be an alteration of that other D word that refers to a certain male organ. Pervs... As if Freud's fascination with his genitalia wasn't enough to persuade people into uncovering the phallic symbolism of every atom in the universe.
The dictionary refers me to the words "jerk" and "nerd."
The origins of the words are especially interesting:
NERD:
Etymology: perhaps from nerd, a creature in the children's book If I Ran the Zoo (1950) by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel)
: an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits
JERK:
Etymology: probably alteration of yerk
: an annoyingly stupid or foolish person
Ok, so in a nutshell, I am "slavishly devoted to intellectual pursuits," and yet I manage to be annoyingly stupid? Now that takes talent if ya ask me!
In the words of a wise man (or was it Lil Jon?),
Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaayyyyyyya
