the evolving singles scene
Jane Fonda made aerobics and the gym hot for more than a workout in the '70s, as it became a spot to pick up leotard and leg-warmer wearing women or men clad in short shorts and head bands. In the '80s, the grocery store was the spot to bump into love, over a head of iceberg lettuce or, for the adventurous, the frozen foods aisle. The '90s saw a rise in the popularity of chain bookstores and coffee joints (or, in some cases, coffee joints in chain bookstores), which offered young singles a cerebral and caffeine-infused setting for their pursuits in love.
Where is the singles scene now? Some would say the internet; others would say the last car of the 6 train (and by "others," I mean my friend Rich, who swore he read about it in the NYTimes...); still others are convinced that the bookstores and/or coffee joints are still holding strong.
What do you think?
