The future of Money

While watching the Trek episodes, movies and what not I have been confounded a few times and wanted to know if I was thinking about it correctly. Most of the times people in star trek really don't talk about money, or even if they use money to pay for things they seems to use terms parallel to it. There seems to be a generalized view of barter system going on where the basis seems to be latinum bars (in DS9) and in other episodes it seems to be something else like plasma fuel or something.
Are we going towards a barter system in the future?

well that's the price paid in the show only, why we can not get to that future without having to go through a war that wiped out half of humanity? I hope to think that we are better than that. The idea of the third world war came to Star Trek due to the fact that it was written in the height of the cold war in the 60's

I always loved that idea of the fact that people had gotten away from accumulation and were focusing more on personal growth, but when I think about the price that they had to pay for it (the third world war) it gives me the shudders. What do you think? is the price of having such a glorious future too high in the present terms?

In a Star Trek world people have gotten away from money and earthly possessions. The United Federation of Planets do not have currency the way we use it today, people simply get what they want any time they want it. The worlds around the Federation have money and still use it. the common currency is called credits. Also humans who leave the federation and venture on their own, earn and use money like everyone else.
