Most Condoms in India Used to Make Saris

NEW DELHI (AP) - Only a quarter of condoms made in India are used for sex, most of the others are used to make saris, toys and bathroom slippers, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The condoms are valuable to manufacturers because of the lubricant on them. Sari weavers place the condoms on their thread spools and the lubricant on the prophylactics is rubbed off on the thread, making it move faster through their sewing machines, The Economic Times newspaper quoted an Indian industry official as saying.

Sari makers also turn the condom's inside out, place them on their fingers and use the high-quality lubricant to polish gold and silver threads used in the traditional Indian women's outfits.

India manufactures more than 1 billion condoms annually to check population growth and curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.

"Our largest condom factory has exploded," the Indian President cried. "My people`s favorite form of birth control. This is a true disaster!"
"Mr. Man Mohan Singh, the Pakistani people would be happy to do anything within their power to help you," replied Musharraf.
"I do need your help" said Mr. ManMohan Singh.
"Could you send 7 hundred million condoms ASAP to tide us over, otherwise, our population will be doubled next year?"
"Why certainly! I`ll get right on it," said Mr. Musharraf.
"Oh, and one more small favor, please?" said Mr. ManMohan Singh.
"Yes?"
"Could the condoms be red in color and at least 10" long and 4" in diameter?"
"No problem," replied Mr. Musharraf
Mr. Mr. ManMohan Singh hung up and started laughing with his aides about how those stupid Pakis will fall for anything.
Mr. Musharraf hung up and called the CEO of a condom company.
"I need a favor. Can you send 7 hundred million condoms right away over to India?"
"Consider it done," replied the CEO of the condom company.
"Good! Now listen, they have to be red in color, 10" long and 4" wide."
"Easily done. Anything else?"
"Yeah," said Mr. Musharraf. "Print `MADE IN Pakistan`, SIZE: SMALL on each one."

who even figured this out? I'd like to meet that person. how and why did he/she even come across this use for it? how did that even cross their mind? maybe they were just sitting around one day thinking, "Hmmm you know this sari weaving is getting really difficult, there's just SOMETHING missing,... ... .... of course! condoms!!"

Aangil is sooooo right, its not just an Indian crisis but an international crisis...just a few more frightening stats: India occupies only 2.4% of the world's land area, yet it supports over 16% of the world's population. Almost 40% of Indians are younger than 15 years of age....and this was all from 2001, I"m sure things are even worse now.....with more people and those younger than 15 hitting their hormonal teenage years.

Good article. Do they even know how to use condoms when they are sexually involved? Maybe the condoms are defected. They are multiplying pretty fast ;)

This article is funny, yet very saddening. India's population needs to be controlled, not to mention the spread of Sexually transmitted diseases. I hope somehow people are educated into using condoms more. It should not be a taboo subject at all; and should be taught even in schools to teenagers. Perhaps one of the reasons they're not used is because the females feel 'shy' to ask their husbands/boyfriends to use them. This is a problem everywhere and I hope girls become more assertive and demand to have safer sex.

Aangil - impressed by your stats! the over 1 billion manufactured are not all being used by the 100 million couples, any ideas on how many go into manufacturing saris? The stats on usage would be even lower than circa one person per month. So it's a really grave situation. Unless they device something that all women using those saris with the condom treatment dont get pregnant, what an innovation that would be, and a happier less populated subcon.

More than 1 billion, that's nothing. India's population is around one billion, let's say 40% of them are below 18 and 20% are too old. That leaves us with 400 million who are eligible adults. Let's say 50% of them are single. So that leaves us with 200 million people or 100 million couples. 100 million couples using more than 1 billion condomes in a year is fewer than one condom per couple per month.

No wonder the population boom and rise in HIV cases!
