the joys of plastix

Okay, I'll admit it...I was watching one of the 1001 new reality shows on tv-Before and After, featuring a guy who lives in the OC, who felt compelled to get his face redone. The dude got liposuction on his neck, cheek (neck fat) and chin (plastic) implants, and a nose job. I mean the guy looked totally normal before the surgery, and aside from a more prominent chin and a wee bit straighter nose, he barely looked any different. He thought it was worth it. What would compel someone to go through this? Is it haram to have a perceived imperfection corrected? What if it was an acquired imperfection vs congenital? What's your personal threshold, people?

wow, that's got to take more than a little time... I remember reading that either infra-red or near infra-red light can penetrate soft tissues and actually be used to image through skin in real time. I'll see if I can find the article. I'll take you up on that in three years, insha'Allah. :)

Rahat: I agree with you here, its all about moderation and intent. I don't think its ungrateful or obsessive to be bothered by what one might characterize as a flaw in one's physical appearance. At the same time some folks take it to a ridiculous extreme. How does laser resurfacing work? Is it similar to dermal abrasion? Are there particular wavelengths/wattages that work on different tissues? :)

Comparing eugenics to cosmetic surgery is still a stretch, imho. though I get your point. the issue used to be more black n white for me-as was most everything when I was seven-but I'm hesitant to outright jump on the slices-of-silicone-r-haram bandwagon now. maybe because I don't wanna grow old, lol! but really, is it wrong to correct a cleft palate? Is it wrong to correct your vision or resurface your face with a laser? if those things are permissible, at what point, if there is one, does it become haram? would you still do it if you thought it was haram but thinking about that huge nose kept you up nights?

Imagine a day when through genetic engineering parents could design their baby to inherit the better facial features/body size tendency from either parent.

tattos and piercings are less invasive and more reversable than botox injections, facial reconstruction to resemble Cindy Crawford or Aishwarya Rai

Like anything else, plastic surgery can be abused. What defines "excessive" is really rather fluid and impossible to define. Jacko's use of plastic surgery is undoubtedly excessive. Is this guy? My guess is that he's got some narcissism or self esteem issues, and in the grand western tradition decided to throw money at the problem. Maybe he's from LA, it seems to me that the folks out that way have this unrealistic idea of what beauty is... I think that everyone is beautiful in their own way, except Ann Coulter.

I don't think plastic surgery is haram... that said, I am not personally inclined to any form of artificial enhancement... I prefer to live with what God has given me.... I can understand if a bald guy wants to get a hair transplant, a fat person liposuction. But breast/lips enhancements or the equivalent for guys is a total waste of time in my humble opinion...
