The Life of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi:As an Example of Self-Devotion to the Mankind-3-
In 1943 he was arrested again and tried at Denizli Criminal Court together with 126 of his students. The reason of the arresting was that one of Bediuzzaman?s writings was secretly published in Istanbul. Even being in prison, he was going on struggling for religious freedom. He started reforming the criminals, who were considered lost for the society. Besides that, he also wrote new treatises. Because paper and pen were prohibited in the prison, Bediuzzaman used small pieces of paper torn paperbags and smuggled out in matchboxes.
Then an order came from Ankara and he was sent to another town, Emirtag where he tirelessly continued to serve Qur?an and belief. This period also ended with arrest. Together with fifty-three students he was sent to Afyon Criminal Court and spent a year in Afyon prison. The cruelties they encountered there were even worse than in all those that preceded them.
Bediuzzaman was at that time seventy years old and suffered from various illnesses. Still, he was isolated in a cell with broken windows, where he spent two severe winters. It is said that he was poisoned. Those of his students who dared to approach him in order to help him were ruthlessly bastinadoed.
The sentences given were annulled by the Appeal Court; the Court however took its time in deciding whether or not to withdraw the sentences. After Bediuzzaman and his students had spent in prison the terms specified in the annulled conviction, the Court finally made up its mind decided that they should be released. And eight years after later came the final decision: in 1956, the Court announced that those who spent almost two years in prison after truly dreadful conditions had now been found innocent.
It was in 1959 when the banon the call the prayer was lifted. It was one of the first decisions of the new Parliament. Unfortunately, soon after that decision, on March 23, 1960 Bediuzzaman Said Nursi departed this world. Thus completed a lifetime of ever eighty years with even minute spent in service of faith he did so with complete honour, dignity, and victory.
He left behind him a body of work that would illuminate this and forthcoming centuries, and love that would be handed down from generation to generation.
