THE "P" BONDS

A Palestinian friend of mine e-mailed this;
==============================
Friends, this is an appeal to the Palestinian and Arab community in particular.

No other people and nation has stood consistently steadfastly in support of our causes, concerns and issues than the people and the nation of Pakistan.

Today they need your help. Let?s show that we also care.

For the Palestinians, there is no truer friend and supporter than Pakistan. Solidarity rallies in support of Palestinians have been a hallmark of Pakistani streets for a generation. Three of Pakistan?s most prominent Sons have been the most passionate and elegant supporters of Palestine and Arab causes.

The great Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz made Beirut his home for many years. He left his mark on that city as much as it left its mark on him. The poet of beauty and love wrote sad revolutionary song that is unmatched and according to many ?is not be found in any language of the world?:

For the love of your flower-like lips,
We were sacrificed on the dry branches of the noose,
For the desire of the candles of your hands
We were killed on half-dark paths.
And with revolutionary dignity:
On our lips the words of the ghazal,
And the torch of misery in our hands,
Gather our banners from the place of murder,
Caravans of other lovers will emerge,
For whose path our feet have shortened the distances of pain

We can all see ourselves in these beautiful words.

No other intellectual voice was as articulate and loving more than that of the late great Iqbal Ahmad. Edward Said dedicated one of his most influential works, Culture and Imperialism to Iqbal Ahmad. Said, the pride of Palestinians, credit Iqbal for his reconnection with being an Arab and
Palestinian. That is no small achievement. Iqbal Ahmad went to Palestine and famously said: "I came to you from a distant land; and I came because I'm a Palestinian like you." In the audience was Dr. Iyad Sarraj who later wrote: that was strange because he was a Muslim from Pakistan. He isn't even an Arab; so how could he be Palestinian? Iqbal Ahmad was addressing hundreds of participants in a human rights international conference organized by Mr. Raji Sourani in 1994. The keynote speaker was supposed to be Edward Said; but he sent his best friend because he was ill.The great philosopher went on to explain the meaning of being a Palestinian, and how Palestine means love of justice. It points to the difference between victim and aggressor. It means freedom and human victory over evil. Tariq Ali is the elegant voice of Palestine today. His passion and articulation of Arab causes are unparallel. His defense of our causes, his anti-war arguments are flawless and tireless. Arabs and Palestinians in particular, are fortunate that these three sons of Pakistan are passionate lovers of Palestine.

Today their beloved Pakistan needs your help. Please help. By assisting the relief effort we are paying a long over due tribute to a nation that at its very core, harbors love and support for us. Iqba, Faiz and Ali earned our support and demand our generosity.
