THE SISTERS HAVEN- UK
THE SISTERS HAVEN (Coventry & Hounslow)
Since 1999, the Sisters Haven has been the only Muslim charity in the UK
providing free help, advice, support and safe accommodation for Muslim
women fleeing or suffering from Domestic Violence and Abuse. Our main
base is in Midlands and since 2003 we have not received funding from
any Government, Local Authority or Muslim organisation. We are
accommodating sisters from various backgrounds including those who
have no recourse to public funds.
In 2003 the Local Authority stopped our funding which lead to severe
financial difficulties and being evicted by our Housing Association.
We have somehow managed to carry on, alhamdulillah.
The Sisters Haven has now found another premises and we have also
established a base in Hounslow, West London. However, we are still
in a very serious financial crisis and are hoping that some Muslims
will come forward and help us in whatever way they can.
While the world is experiencing difficult times with natural and
political disasters, and Muslims are suffering all over, it is no doubt
a duty on all of us to help one another wherever we may be. But
at the same time, we must not forget our own doorsteps, which need
to be higher on our list of priorities.
The mosques are failing in their role to create a better moral society,
the youth are turning away from the mosques, and the Muslim organisations
are not providing any real support to vulnerable Muslim women, especially
those who are suffering some of the worst physical and emotional abuse,
which often does not get reported. There are only a few organisations
and scholars who have supported our work while the Muslim media has
largely stayed away.
