The soul?s connection to the body...

Our bodies are only one part of who we are as humans. Medicine, before the separation of ?science and religion? was not only about the body, but included the psycho-spiritual make up of humans. The dualism between the body and soul is very clearly evident in the physical world. The body is subservient and the soul is in charge; however both are indispensable. It is just that the soul is the master while the body is the obedient servant.
The body has its rights and its demands upon us. However what worth does the body have without the soul? It is a mere corpse, no matter how powerfully or beautifully it is constructed. If the soul departs from it, it becomes a wasted husk. Its beauty can only be realized in partnership with the soul.

If we look to apply this concept within an Islamic context, we immediately notice that our four primary acts of worship ? prayer , fasting, Zak?h, and Hajj ? and indeed all forms of worship, require the participation of both the body and soul.
At the same time, should not we know why our Lord, in His infinite wisdom, commands us to offer prayers at fixed times in a prescribed manner? Should we not wonder about the effects that these prayers should have on our persons and our lives?

Athar,

I wouldn't expect you to change your position either. Where is the fun if everyone holds identical views anyway? ;)

Very true. There came a time when I was having a hard time saying my prayers regularly. A christian friend (3go3) asked me to say at least one salah per day. I did, and it changed my life. Very simple and straightforward. Thanks for sharing akhi.

how does "conciousness" relate to "soul"? if/when science is ever able to define the former ... may be the latter would be a bit more understandable in material terms?

I know I'm tooting my own horn, but I'm so pleased with this effort.. and more importantly, I want to share it because it is in line with Fahad's second-last comment:
".. indeed all forms of worship, require the participation of both the body and soul."

My latest JE comes from an experience I recently had, where this kind of a spontaneous prayer-song lead to a mystical experience for me.. More coming.. but the JE holds its own.. (Prayer Song.)

thank you - very nice! I totally agree! everything we do affects our soul and body... we need to be rightly ordered in both in order to be "good" or "moral". nice job. :) i like!
