The South

Brazil moves left with lulu, and strengthens relation with the Arab and Muslim countries, and Cuba

Venezuela moves left with chaves, strengthens relations with Arab and Muslim Countries, and Cuba.
Bolivians protest in the streets for nationalization of energy systems, similar to what happened in Iran. in 1980

Argentina is economically stumbling, unrest grows, probably shift in power from ruling America Frendlies to Leftist Leadership before end of the year.

The president of El Salvador is a Palestinian, and the main contender, who ran against him, was also a Palestinian.

There are changes coming to the western hemisphere, the next diplomatic wars will come from south of the texas border, as the next great military war will rage in east Asia.

Lets watch the South.

if it happens will america get invovled? will it if venezuela and Brazil step in? will venezuela step in if America gets involved? i very much doubt that america won't be invovled in a war that occurs on its hemisphere, but will other countries toss their chits into the mix?

I know a group of Youth from Orange County going to Venezuela for the World Festival of Students and Youth. It would take place from 7-15 August 2005 ( www.handsoffvenezuela.org). To generate funds they have been organizing fund-raiers. One of them included the screening of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", a documentary about the coup against Chavez.

the counter Chavez-coup, and the grass-roots support to bring him back is probably the beacon that other leftists needed to justify themselves, and to convince themselves that peaceful takeover is possible. Even though the US came down hard in favor of the Coup, Chavez was out of jail and running the country again by the end of the week. pretty impressive for a bloodless coup and equally bloodless countercoup.

I think the main battles are between ideologies on how to run the country. In latin america the communists and socialists tend to wage battles against the capitalists, they won the first round nearly throughout central and south america, then one by one counter-coups, outright war, economic pressure, invasions, and diplomacy made them all fall, except for cuba. And it looks like the leftists are gaining strength again and coming back for round two. although very few are doing it with military strategy, most are moving in through the democratic process, that makes them harder, but not impossible, to be gotten rid of from outside. And, to thier benefit, it means they have to compromise their hard left stances to be acceptable to large numbers of voters, thus increasing their popular support.

i can't really tell if they will fight amongst themselves. Unlike African, Asian nations the South American nations are fairly recent, their borders are artificial, and the people share similar culture, religion and language. They don't have the tribes/ethnicities that africa the middle east, the balkans and asia has. So their divisions aren't as ingrained.

fascinating stuff platoshadow! now what i find interesting is that in the last five years, despite a lot of crazy stuff happening all over south america- peru, brazil, panama - there has been scanty news reporting on these countries and a heavier focus on the middle east. i think that because south america has followed the pattern of most other poor postcolonial nations, that they will continue to fight amongst themselves beforre they get their act together and challenge the u.s. they fell prey to the "divide and rule" technique under spanish colonization and because it's still very much a ruling one percent elite presiding over a mass of poor people, any fighting will probably be inthe form of coups or rebellions within the countries. like in africa and asia. what do you all think?

Speaking of changes in the Western Hemisphere, the demography of the Southern US states is changing by the day. New Mexico had the highest percentage of Hispanics (43%) followed by California (34%), Texas (34%) and Arizona (25%).
