The Twentieth Wife

I just finished this book and enjoyed it immensely.... after studying moghul art a few years ago in college, i yearned a historical fiction account of what life must have been like for the emperors and empresses of the time. this book provided that account and more. i really think muslims need to read this kind of books about accounts of parts of the muslim empire to really understand our roots.... and to realize how much we have to be proud of as well as analyze their downfalls.... any thoughts on this book? I plan on reading the sequel too

oh that's right - it does have some of it! but the main character is definitely mehrunissa. the whole khurram and arjumand love story is more on the side. . .one part was a lil weird, but overall - it's really sweet! :o)

yeah - i totally agree about the culture of the zenana. i had issues when i was reading it, but you're right - that's how it was. i mean, i remember when i went to turkey and saw the harem at topkapi palace - woah, it was huge and lavish. oh and i also loved the love story part of the book! the sequel has more politics in it, but i guess that was to be expected since mehrunissa is now an empress.

yah i did have the authors note which was a nice touch... its kinda funny, even tho the description of all the political ongoings was interesting, i just wanted to get back to the love story part.. like why did he wait four years when he knew she was in the zenana at the end? the concept of the emperors sleeping with so many women is a bit wierd and im not so sure im comfortable with it... but i guess it happened and that was the culture back then :-/

no problem! lemme know what you think of 'sister of my heart' also! :o) did your version of the book have the author's note at the end? from what i remember, she included some info on what she 'made up' and what she found to be historically accurate. as far as 'feast of roses' - i definitely think it's worth reading still. a lot of people told me they didn't like it prior to me reading it - but i loved the first one so much that i HAD to read the second one. :o) i just felt that she condensed too much in the second book. . .so too much happens too fast without a lot of description as to how and why.

ws tanveer! yah, i think u mentioned that and i heard that from a lot of other ppl too... thanks for the recommendation! i definetly couldnt put this one down (even on vacation!). the book on the whole was verry interesting and insightful... i wish we could know how much of it was really true :) I loved the insights into the zenana and how the women behind the "veil" helped run the empire too... is the sequel worth reading at all?

salaams saba! yey!! i'm SO glad you liked it - definitely one of my fave books! :o) a slight caveat though - the sequel isn't as good. . .definitely readable, but after 'the twentieth wife' - it was a bit of a disappointment.
