The USS or the UFP

The other day when I was watching Capt. Picard conversing with Romulans, i noticed maybe for the first time that all the ships in the Federation are actually called the USS somehting.

It struck me as odd, that all the ships should start their name from USS (United States Ship), why not UFP (United Federation of Planets) Enterprise (although USS rolls of the tounge easily). I know it seems a little too odd, now that we are so used to USS, Just some food for thought :).

Well nowadays usually the USS Abraham or the USS Nimitz they all stand for United States Ship, similar to in the UK where HMS Trafalgar or somehting similar stand for (His Majesty's Ship). But I think in Star Trek it stood for something else.

Are you sure it stands for United States Ship, maybe in real life that's what it stands for when you are talking about the ships? It is interesting to think about.

Is USS United StarFleet Ships or is it United States Ships?
I can't believe I'm actually asking this question.
