okies! I finally went out and bought my guitar! :) I got an ibanez acoustic electric! I'm gonna start out by getting some videos from the library to help learn the basics.

As far as acoustics being harder to learn given I don't know how to play either I don't think it matters.

I agree, whatever youre drawn to, is what you should get ... there are some decent electrics out there for not too much, and you'll have a great time! let us know how you make out...

You mean a 57...the 75 is a discontinued 5 string bass.

Electric... no question. Much easier, and a lot more fun since you can use effects to get wildly different sounds from the same guitar. It's much harder to learn on an acoustic, but trust me, once you go electric, you'll forget about your acoustic (speaking of which, is anyone interested in an Ovation CC075).

I went out for milk the other day and came home with an Ibanez S Series. Gorgeous guitar and plays like a dream.

One peice of advice, check out local guitar shops since they may be able to match internet prices, and you can see and feel them in person. Makes a difference.

Unless you're going to be belting out the blues or singing spanish love songs...don't get an acoustic.

Buy an electric because it'll be far easier to learn chords and scales on. Then when you've gotten a decent level of proficiency on both then buy an acoustic.

People have this misconception that acoustic is in some way easier or even inferior to electric because "electric" usually signifies technological superiority.

The fact is that electric guitar is far easier to play than an acoustic any day. Playing an acoustic requires a certain level of technical mastery. When people don't take this into consideration and buy an acoustic as their first guitar and have a tough time holding down an F chord they give up.

I'd strongly recommend a Fender Strat or Strat clone. The Ibanez' and Jacksons are great if you love to shred but the ease of their necks can be a crutch later on.

If you're leaning towards acoustic then go for that... I find that electric is easier to get into cos

a) strings are easier to play on (lighter gauge)
b) you can just have a bash and sound good :o)

A few ppl I know have got an acoustic but then given up as it takes longer to get a tune together...

In terms of what to get, depends on your budget. A lot of beginners around here go for Yamaha/Crafter for starter acoustics or Squier/Yamaha for starter electrics...

if you're also into singing and song-writing, than go with acoustic, learn a few chords and start singing. But if you wanna just make noise and kick ass, then get an electric guitar, download tabs for your favorite songs, and start rockin out.

To start with, you can try an Ovation Applause perhaps. :) It is an acoustic electric.
