To Choose or Not to Choose?

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatu,

I'm collecting views on whether one should follow a specific madhab or not, because I've heard arguments both ways and am now officially confused :S So please share your thoughts on this topic, the more, the merrier!

i was always taught that you can follow a madhab as long as your learn the evidence behind what you follow. That doesn't necessarily mean you have to learn everything there is to know about a madhab. It just simply means you should know the evidence behind the things you do. Like why you make wudu this way, why you pray this way, why you do this when you go to hajj, blah blah.

wa alaaykum salaam wa rahmatulahe wa barakatoh.
If a person is at a stage of spiritual development after conversion that the details of differences between madhabs are meaningless, then it is not time to pick one. But if a person is at a stage that you are ready to address the issues; such as should you pray with hands folded or at sides, then it is time to investigate. Our ultimate goal is to follow true Islam and true Sunnah of the Prophet (saw). There are different madhabs because different sources of hadith, etc., can lead one to different conclusions about some of the smaller details of Islamic belief and practice. So as long as we're still looking for truth, we should endeavor to make a study of those differences and their sources and with a heart open to Allah swt's guidance seek the best path. Since we do not have a lifetime to study these things for ourselves, at least most of us do not, it is reasonable for a truth-seeker to seek out the most upright of our religious scholars as a source for understanding these differences and making the best choice. If you follow the most pious, upright leaders you are likely to be closer to the truth.

wa Alaikum Assalam Wa RahmatuAllah wa Barakatuh!! I ran into some scholars that recommend one to follow and stick to a madhab. However from personal experience I feel that this could be divisive especially when people are not well versed in all madhabs. Also the majority of scholars I knew/met recommend to adopt a madhab ONLY for those who are seeking to specialize in Islam/take on leadership roles, but not for the regular people as it can be more divisive than anything.. Allah knows best! Edgard

I don't know the answer by myself but your question has been asked and answered before on islamonline.net. so please have a look on it

So you might consider this as another argument but I wish that it will remove the confusion that you have in Shaa Allah.
