To work or not to work...

Working women all around the world are faced with a dilemma as old as women's lib and the glass ceiling: being stay-at-home moms or continuing with their careers. Do you plan on trading in the corporate ladder for diapers and baby bottles? How about you guys out there? Gender roles are increasingly changing in todays day and age. More and more dads are staying home with the kids as women become the primary bread winners. After having truly horrible experiences with nannies, my cousin, who is a doctor and his wife---a genetic engineer---decided that it would be best if he stayed at home to raise their son while she continued to work. How do you guys feel about being Mr. Mom?

the question truy becomes... do the 2 peeps in the marriage perceieve each other as equals. I notice more often than not - the gents I have met have not even questioned whether it will be me staying at home raising kids or them... sad really! BUT I do think one parent should be home with the kid(s)... I am so confident that if I have any brats of my own... I will be connected to them- i would love the opportunity for my hubby to get to know his kids more... but as long as there is a logical discussion... whatever is best for the kids should dictate the decision...

So I really think its a genetic thing: the idea that women should stay home and the men continue to earn a living. One of my very close couple friends had a baby about a year ago. She was finishing her masters at the time, he's a prof at a university. Anyway, she stayed home for the first 4 months on mat. leave, and then he stayed home for the next 4 months on un-official paternity leave. The other day she told me that he had said to her that he didnt think that she fully appreciated his decision to stay home for the 4 months! Of course, there's more to this that I cant really get into, but I was absolutely floored...

Staying home with the kids does not preclude a man from earning a decent living. At the risk of appearing to be paying lip service, it is something I would love to do. As an aspiring writer, I wouldn't mind taking care of the little ones. Ive actually kind of dreamt of a life where I can walk my kids to school and pick them up. Is there any job more important? The fact is too many fathers are absentee whether they are in the home or not. We wonder what went wrong when they get older. I want to have a strong hand in helping my kids form their values, teach them to think critically, and more substantial things like languages, art, math, classics. Although I must admit this whole dream is predicated on becoming a successful author and professor.

Come on, Bleeeeach. When it really comes down to making the decision, I think most men would feel somewhat emasculated at the thought of their wives taking on the role of breadwinner.
