US soldiers desecrating the Koran

Quite curious to find out what has been said on your shores people about this story.

The FT of yesterday morning published an article in which it said that the US government put pressure on Newsweek to apologize about their article and confirm that they had no proofs that soldiers in Guantanamo have desecrated the Koran.

Newsweek apparently apologized and admitted that their claims might ahve been wrong.

However, yesterday on French national TV, a french reporter was interviewing a former prisonner from Guantanamo who confirmed the facts.

Who to believe ?!???

Why will they not abuse the Quran! To them it is just a book that is different than their own holly book(s) hint. If they didn?t have the humanity to know how to deal with human beings at Abu Greab prison so why should I not believe they would do such thing.

NSW: Not surprising at all. There's no doubt in my mind that the Qur'an has been mishandled (to say the least) in attempts to weaken prisoners/etc. Intel agencies having multi-paged memos on the care & caution to be used w/ the Qur'an ain't out of benevolance.

ok, i realized that in the time i took to write that comment, i could have just written a letter to the president. it's useless energy to comment amongst ourselves, instead our time means something if our energy is channelled into activism. i just drafted a letter and send the first one in my village LOC. Please check it out: www.naseeb.com vlID=529

fattoun- yes, check out this village, you'll see, many letters have been sent about various issues. what do u mean about 'leads'? every letter brings to their attention that muslims are not sitting ducks, that we are politically active and as part of the political fabric of this country, they must be sensitive to muslims. desecrating the Quran is an outrage! f-dog: i agree that we should write letters for all of the causes you have mentioned. human lives are precious and injustice against them should be protested. that does not make the desecration of the Quran any less offensive. the Quran physically is sacred b/c of the message and words it contains. that is why we are to do wudu and be clean before we touch it. that is why we are supposed to place it on the highest shelves in our houses and not on the floor. writing letters is not 'playing' into any hands. it is our duty to stand up for this humiliation. writing letters is a constructive thing to do, always (we are not talking about death and destruction, it's writing letters bro!)

f they had been abusing prisoners sexually and morally over past 3 yrs they might as well desecrecate teh Quran. the lack of morality of these soldiers is stark especially when many ofthem belei ve there on a crusade. no doubt the US govt pressured Newsweek into making a retraction as they dont want to add fuel to the Abu Ghreib Fire.

i think by writing letters and showing an excessive revereince to the physical text of the quran plays right into their hands.....its not the physical text of the quran that we should revere but the actual meanings of that text.......muslims get blown up in iraq ...the detaines in guantanamo....etc no one is protesting for them....this is almost puerile

someone wrote a JE about this. i'd like to know which contacts we should address in the US administration and if someone would be willing to draft an email to them about this. we could post it in my village letterofconcern where it makes it easy for others to send the same email by simply a couple clicks. any volunteers let me know. whenever there are offensive issues like this i think we should do more than just read about it. (i'm busy moving these days so can't do it myself)

US forces know the power abusing the Qur'an in front of religious prisoners. The Pentagon has a 2 or 3 paged memo on the proper handling of the Qur'an, which some in military circles believe helps in part in 'ideas' to weaken morale during torturing sessions.

Not many people who believed the the Qur'an was desecrated per the Newsweek report are going to believe that the claims 'might have been wrong'. Clearly, Newsweek buckled to White House pressure and retracted it.

it's been reported for the past two years, bbc & Russian news sources have covered it before...i'm not quite sure what to make of its recent hype. There's an article addressing your question in today's washington post.
