v twins vs 4 cylinders

with the latest entry by sadaat (and finally something posted in this village recently) i tought id follow it up with a question to you all.....

v twins or 4 cylinders which do you prefer?

i've had both and i like the smoothness of the 4 cylinders, torque is not there as much (based on just 2 bikes ive had) but i like the 4 cylinders much more.

the name eludes me... i think the prototype was called ER-6... have the link at home but thats far removed from where i sit this fine afternoon under african skies.

the bm's doing a-ok... didn't take more than a week to get it sorted out. lotsa battle scars though... adds to the character and patina of the bike. she'll have a stablemate before the years out, for sure.

yo kapagama -- miss that parallel twin of yours? check out the latest 2006 kwacker inline twin. i'll bet it has a glorious sound to it when you wind it out... looks good too. looks like bm's gonna be launching one too pretty soon. the kwacker's a looker though... i like! insanehussain.smugmug.com

ummm, flat twin here... but hey, i ride a quirky bmw... i'm used to being ignored! 2 cylinders: gobs of torque throughout the rpm range. smooth, predictable, linear power delivery. vibes are very low frequency... a rhythmic thump-thump... and don't discount the smoothness of a 4 valve (per head) twin thats adjusted spot on with a throttle body synch... its orgasmic. can't go wrong with a big bore twin for street riding, all the grunt where you need it. 4 cylinders: phenomenal, if not intimidating, power hit in the heady rpms. need precision throttle management in the party zone. riding on the edge, these babies will spit you off where a twin would be a lot more forgiving. high frequency vibes... buzzy engine. (got tingling in the hands?) that said... i'm on the hunt for a cbr600rr! 2 wheels good... 2 or 4 cylinders... love em both, just gotta pick the right tool for the job.

i've had both as well, and i must say whining out a yamaha 4 cyl. is quite exhilirating, but now that i've gone v-twin, i don't think i could go back. i love the torque and the sound and feel. but its a personal thing really. some people like bread and butter others toast and jam and some like both.
