vegan bashing

ever notice the hatred for non-animal coinsures? it has caused me to be in the closet w/ my vegan-hood. in fact it was i who started the organics village w/ the hope that other vegan minded folk would come forth. it was a secret code of sorts.

i get shunned a lot for simply being suspected of being vegan, A LOT! while my family accepts and even encourages my eating habits, this is not my experience overall; among muslims as well as non-muslims.

i feel more discriminated against as a vegan than as a woman, a muslim, and a minority b/c its an all encompassing intolerance that is inflicted. even among many that see that its wrong to prejudge a group as a general rule find it perfectly ok to vent at the expense of vegs.

most often, when i am outed, i get meat shoved in my face, and soon become the butt of some rather humorless/witless attacks whenever there's a conversational lull. it gets real old, real fast; yet it continues.

the most common retort, ?i hate ppl who don?t eat meat!? followed by the misgiving that we are emaciated, have osteoporosis, are anemic, have no energy, weak, and balding; to name a few. don?t forget the unfunny jokes.

i think maybe ppl who hate on us do so b/c they feel like we are implying they are bad ppl. perhaps assuming that we assume things about them; passing judgment on carnivores. i guess the solution is to try extra hard not to be perceived as being high and mighty/self righteous about our eating habits.

your thoughts?

oh, and cool logic via how your explaining your veganess gave you practice for explaining your embrace of islam.

its an intolerance of ideas that motivates this kinda animosity. whether its an ethnic, political, racial or even dietary prejudice, it all comes down to the same premise, xenophobia. why must others hate what is different? so long as we do not force our views on others we should be left alone. we are not hurting anyone; ourselves (as some will insist) and we are certainly not hurting animals or the environment. i just hope there will not be a constitutional amendment against herbivores next.

Hmm...in regards to the last part of your comment first, I think there may be something to this, people may be defensive b/c they think by not eating the same food, we're saying their food is "wrong." In this spirit I wonder if the village pic could be taken to mean this?? I'm kinda confused about whether it's a joke or what? I'm absolutely used to people picking on my food, I worked as a co-op student one year during Uni and my lunch was THE lunch discussion, everyday! Lol I explained my eating habits to every new person I met and defended my habits against attack from the same people for over a year. I sounded like a broken record, but they kept asking, so I kept explaining my views. In fact when I converted I thought my veganism and being used to defending it against the "norm" would be of great value in explaining my conversion to people, because it's also something that is not so common where I am from and something some people have very strong feelings about. While this made me feel "safe," I had forgotten about the PC aspect :) You're right, it's not acceptable to question someone's religion (and by "question" I mean put down), but is totally cool for many people to attack peoples dinner, of all things. While it's "not as important," the idea behind it is quite similar, and it's very tiring after a while. One thing I look for in friends is a quality I've defined as "vegan-friendliness" lol, or the ability to have a relationship with me in which we discuss more than the suitability of my diet :)
